My son is equipping his boat. He’s shopping for go devils to power it.
Any ideas on cost? Also, anything in particular to look out for with go devils?
I have not used them much. I just have an idea that they break a lot.
TIA.

How big a boat does he have and how far does he need to travel?
Reason I ask is, if he doesn't need to go far to the blind, even the smaller hp motors can move a pretty good load in the mud. I had a friend with a little 9hp and with 3 people in the boat he could force the prop down in the mud and it would go.
I'm sure you can find a used one for a decent price with the invent of the surface drive.
ETA: My couple of friend that have had them had very few issues. They are very simple machines.

I’ve got a 16hp crawfish model I can make you a great deal on. I believe it’s a 2013, I’ve used it very little. It’s collecting dust
It pushes a 14’ x 38” flat with ease

I can understand folks hunting marshes and tidal areas using mud motors but I see them on the Columbia River LOL. My 2072 with a 60 HP Tiller on a jack plate will run in sand, mud, gravel and weeds 30 MPH in 8 inches of water with 6 doz decoys, 2 sizeable folks and an old flatulent lab who need gastric bypass surgery...with a very well grassed blind in less than 8 inches I can trim the motor up and pole it from the front deck for miles or get out and drag it. And with the mercury tiller it almost drives itself....I can pretty much set it and forget it. This is a 1980's model riveted boat and it has been used like this since it was new so I would say if it sank today I got my money out of it...and it weighs about 70% of what a similar welded hull weighs even with nearly 40 years of mud, empty hulls and old vienna sausage cans in it! Mud motors will wear you out!

Thank you all for your input. We found one in his price range, and he is ready to go.

I had a 31 hp and how it didn’t break the bones in the top of my foot on multiple occasions is beyond me. Lol. I would hit a stump and the handle would slam down on the top of my foot. Also one time an older friend asked to drive. He lost control of the handle and the motor “jackknifed” full throttle. If it wasn’t for the flotation built into the boat we would have sunk ????

They are great motors in certain situations. But no neutral was always a turnoff for me. Make sure he wears kill switch, it will toss you out in a heartbeat.

Have first hand knowledge of this. This is a big must.
