I have never hunted with an illuminated scope. I got one in the last few months for a target rifle. I never use the feature, because I'm always in good light. In fact it's an annoyance to me as it reduces how fine the reticle lines are, so it's never on. Are they truly helpful? I mean I'm sure they are if they make so many, but I just don't have experience. I like my red dots in point and shoot applications, but the overpower of light from the dot in a low light situation seems like it would be difficult for super precise shooting.

Leica Amplus

This is what you're looking for. They've been on clearance for a year on EuroOptic. I bought one about this time last year, and couldn't be happier.

More than enough light transmission at dusk, adjustable illumination so the red dot is easily visible no matter the time of day.

Have never owned a Swarovski or one of the higher end Zeiss', but I don't see how you can beat this for $1000.

Whether they're helpful is up to the shooter and what they use it for, I guess. For deer hunting I wouldn't want anything but a very small adjustable point of light at the crosshair if I needed illumination.

That's a very generous budget for a hunting scope.

General comments - if illuminated reticle doesn't interest you, trijicon Huron is even cheaper than the accupoint and still a really good scope.

Check out the rokslide "scooe field evaluations" if you want to crank turrets. Dude over there does a lot of crude testing with them. Opinions vary on what those guys are doing but if it's my money, I like spending it on stuff that passes those "tests"

wanted a Swarovski.

I don't think they're worth the cost for a scope. A scope is a fancy gun sight. It just needs to work and give enough clarity to shoot at the extremes of legal shooting time. My scopes with "junky" glass are plenty good enough for that.

Side by side I can't tell a difference between my Razor HD glass and the Huron. Some scope junkie with a calibrated eyeball might be able to but I can't.

$859 for this Swaro should be well worth the money.

He really just demonstrates that lighter/cheaper SFP hunting scopes aren’t as durable as their $1500 2lb counterparts. Not much of a mystery. As has been mentioned it’s hard to go wrong in OPs price range as long as weight isn’t crazy low.

I should have added that I definitely want a second focal plane scope.

I’ve also been going back and forth on the illumination. So it’s nice to see y’all discuss that too

The only downside is weight. You can turn it on and off.

Usually the only reason someone doesn’t get a nightforce is because it’s too heavy, costs too much, and is FFP. Just sayin.

I have a couple of them and they are indeed very heavy. But, they do make SFP scopes.

I put a leupold vx5 hd 3-15x44 on my grendel. Such a great scope.

This is what I’m leaning towards at the moment.

The current scope I have on it is a Riton primal 3 4x16x44. It’s been adequate but like I said I’d like to take a step up

I have two of them. I consider them the best available hunting scope for the money.

Well to be fair, those are valid reasons

The shv can be had in SFP. It’s a lil heavy at ~30oz but that’s only about 1/2-3/4 pound more than really anything else.
I went with the approach of having a bulletproof scope and dropping a few pounds off the waistline.

The Nightforce scopes seem to have a pretty busy reticle. I would prefer something a bit more classic

Thank yall for the advice, and I will update when I make a purchase. Going to look at the Leupold VX5 HD and the Swaro Z5

I have this with the firedot reticle and I love it. Firedot really helps in low light.

As mentioned earlier, the SHV is really their hunting scope line, and they can be had with a regular sfp duplex. Its part of why the price is so much better than their other lines which are really designed around tactical use.

NX8 can be had in SFP. Their SFP scopes are designated F2.

Here is one: Nightforce

Fairly busy but not a Christmas tree:

And here is a ATACR in SFP:
