Rules-
200 yds on 12, 8 and 4 inch steel
MSRP of gun must be 800 bucks or less
Ammo must be 10 bucks or less on a box of fifty
20 rounds to warm up
30 rounds on targets....10 each

Note- gun can be modified after purchase....trigger, barrel, scope, etc...

I tried it with a Begara BXR and only scored a 14. Scrapped that gun and purchased a CZ 457 Varmit Pro. Hitting 10 out of 10 on the 8 inch. Have not shot it in a match yet. Using SK match grade ammo, Vortex Viper 6x24x50 and upgraded the chassis to the MTR. Using Norma 40gr Tac ammo.

Any suggestions or advice from you baws on how to win this thing. These old guys are kicking my butt.

We have all kinds of guns being used. 10/22s, T-bolts, etc... One guy tried to shoot the match without a scope and he only scored a five out of thirty. Props to him for trying. There is no awards but there is side betting on this. I shoot sub MOA at 300yds with a few of my rifles but I have thousands of dollars in them. This 22 challenge is tough....plus a lot of the shooters are National and Regional winners.

Your barrel isn’t treaded but a barrel tuner would help tighten up your groups.

What do y’all shoot from? Prone, bench, or different barricades?

My barrel is threaded.
We shoot from benchrest.

What is this barrel tuner you speak of?

Cortina Precision Tuner

A barrel tuner threads onto the end of your barrel. You take a few shots, make anther adjustment and take a few more shots, so on until you make a full revolution. You will see your groups open and up and close up as you make the revolution.

You are changing the harmonics of the barrel by turning the tuner on the end of the barrel.

I have one on my 457 (cortina’s original design) and I can say that it does work.

Seems like the serious guys are replacing the 457 barrel with a Shilen and EPS Chamber and using a tuner.

Rimfire isnt my forte, Id try the barrel tuner first before replacing the barrel if it were me.

Maybe not, but mine's been a squirrel killing machine for 37 years.

I think my starting point would be trying lots of different match ammo.

My brother shot competitively for a while and he must've tried hundreds of different loads before he settled on one for his rifle.

Can't help with suggestions, but I'm curious about bullet drop.

I've never shot a 22 past 100. When I did shoot at 100, it was just plinking large steel without trying to group shots.

So, what is the drop rate at 100, 150, 200 yards?

I've shot benchrest competition both RF and CF. I would ditch the Accu Tac bipod and use a quality front rest with micro adjustments and a rear bag filled with heavy sand.
Get a trigger job done or swap out with a Jewell, JARD, Bixn Andy, Shilen, Timney, etc... and set it 1 pound or less. Tuners definitely work ... Shoot free recoil.

Here is my Sako Finnfire P94 with a Lilja Sundberg taper barrel, Jewell 8 ounce trigger, as rifle is pillar and glass bedded. I have duplicate rifles and can swap out 3 different barrels ....22LR, 22 WMR, 17 HMR. I use to shoot the Federal UM1 Olympic ammo but sadly it's no longer made. Now shoot the SK Match

this rifle is wearing a LEU 36x - D scope.

Iv'e used Harrel tuners in the past ...

I prefer a scope with a small target dot crosshair

the CZ 457 MTR with 20" varmint match barrel is the real deal priced at $849. You can get the same rifle with a traditional hunting stock for $649.

edit: can you use windflags ?

Ideally, you want to shoot the same weather condition everytime. Micro-windage adjustments allow you to compensate hold for wind direction.

For the ammo I shoot with a 50 yd zero its 6.3 @ 100, 14.5 @ 150, 23.5 @200, and 44.25 @ 300. Those are my moa come ups.

I'm shooting C457 MTR with some mods from Area419 in Manners stock. I have cleaned a similar NLR22 stage with Lapua Center X. Ammo makes all the difference. It shoots Wolf pretty good and will give it a try with cheaper ammo, but the rile is still above the OP's challenge price range.

50 yrd zero, 200 yards is 6.9 mils, 49.7 inch drop.

TideHater, try different ammo and find out what your rifle likes. 22's can be picky.

Thanks for all the info and suggestions. I have ordered a tuner. I will try even more brands of ammo. Like I said, it has to be under 10 bucks a box. That is what is killing me with it.

Nice guns, GB. Disclaimer: I've never shot 22LR competitively, much less at 200 yds. At my job, I cam across and old gentleman a few months ago who used to shoot at 22LR competitions. I really wish I'd had the time to just sit down and pick his brain, but I didn't. In addition to some of the things already mentioned (trying different ammo or different lots of ammo), I remember he also mentioned the following: Once he found a load that pleased him, he'd buy a big supply of the same lot of ammo; Weighing individual rounds of loaded ammo. He didn't say what his parameters were; Checking rim thickness of the rounds. He didn't say what his parameters were. That's all I got and it ain't much.

Keep us updated. This sounds really interesting, especially since I've just recently started shooting my 22LR's at 100 yds (but not competitively).

ETA: How's the scoring done?? What kind of 200 yard groups is common w/ these guns? Installing a custom barrel is allowed? Seems like that would usually put the price over the limit.

10 rounds on each of the three targets for a score of 30
27 has been the highest score yet. One guy had misses on the larger steel but hit 10/10 on the 4 inch. Go figure. The ammo is the kicker. You can have a super built gun but shooting under 10 dollar a box ammo causes the inconsistency.

It is just a friendly competition between about 30 of us. No money, just bragging rights. They shoot bigger bore National comps so this is just practice for them. I am using it to hopefully learn more about it and possibly shoot big comps later on.....I am a pistol guy.
