Unknown/High Hours on Outboard vs. 'Rebuilt Powerhead'

As the search for the new used boat goes on...I've seen a couple I like that proudly proclaim 'powerhead rebuilt' I plan on having whatever it is I end up purchasing thoroughly inspected, but just a general musing...
Would you shy away from a rebuilt engine, or is this a good sign...Obviously its not a new engine, but would you expect one of these to have several years of usage remaining, as compared to one that has had no work, but claims 800 hours?

I would stay away unless there is a detailed receipt from a reputable mechanic.
Most rebuilds are hack "get it running so I can sell it" jobs and it will get you fricked. Nobody spends good rebuild money on a good rebuild and turns around and sells the boat.
A good rebuild is IMO as good as new as far as the powerhead is concerned. I wouldnt nearly be afraid of one that was done right. One that isnt done right is a short lived grenade.

the run time on an average motor during a fishing trip is going to be about an hour to possibly 2 hours if you travel far so unless its a boat that goes offshore fishing then you can assume the ballpark number of trips on that boat based on that.
if you fish a lot, and i mean a lot, you will average 25-35 fishing trips a year on average so that translates to 50-75 hours a year average hours you should expect to see on a motor.
i could be wrong but to me 800 hours sounds like a car with 800k miles on it, just sayin

Guessing rebuild is on a 2 stroke since 4 stroke rebuilds are cost prohibitive? You want a remanufactured block from the original engine mfg not joes block company. The block for my merc 225 was $5,268.75 reman direct from mercury. Unless they go in with a borescope, you will still be buying a maybe. Could last 20 years or 20 minutes. Tons of boats out there without blown blocks to choose from IMO to take a chance unless you're looking for a particular hull and then i get it.

Keakar,
Modern day 4stroke outboards have powerbeads that are rated for over 3000 hours. This 800 hour = 800,000 miles simply is not correct

When a lot of people rebuild a engine then turn around and try to sell it, they just put new rings on the pistons and throw it back together with new head gaskets. It will run good just long enough to get it sold and then your bad to a fricked up engine.

Buy a new one and it’ll just hurt one time. Buy a piece of shite and it’ll ruin your fun.

The rebuild is on a 2006 150. The one i was comparing to was a 5 year old 140 with 1,000 hours. I didnt think 1,000 hours in 5 years was even possible....

Thanks for all the advice-
Would a good compression and leak down test give you full confidence on a rebuilt powerhead?

Nope. Its easy to make new motor compression on something with minutes of run time on it. Scuff the bores, put some new rings, slap it back together. Dont mic shite, dont change shite, dont look at shite. Itll make power for a while.
Documentation is the only thing I would trust. Good documentation I would be very comfortable with and anything else I would just assume it will need another overhaul.

A 140? Suzuki? Tell you what- go ride with someone down the river or by the boat docks. Count how many 140s you can find.
(About zero)
There is a reason for that. Personally I when it comes to outboards, I want what the masses run where I fish. Typically you see more Yamaha in salt vs Mercs, and I would never own an evinurude. No way no how.
