UA uses synthetics and not much more. You can buy off brand stuff that rivals or beats UA for 1/4 of the price.
Go merino wool for true warmth, breath-ability and no-odor.
ETA: Didn't realize someone asked the question about merino wool brands.
I've bought smart wool, minus 33, patagonia, stoic and random other brands at costco that used around 60% merino wool.
The only one that wasn't quite as durable as the others was minus 33 but it was by far the warmest.
I use amazon, back country, sierra trading post and steepandcheap for my purchases.

Ice breakers, is what I like it is great stuff and it comes in diff weights too. wet wool is better than the dry syenthetic. Wool has worked for thousands of years.
Plus I like to wear usually filson brand wool shirt or their sweaters over top their water fowling sweater is great.
Just remember wash it in cold and line dry it... the sweaters I have them drycleaned at the end of the season and then store it with my other wool items in plastic tubs.
A nice trick i found is i do ride mtn bikes in the winter more than the summer so finding simple warm clothing is key, and I have been huniting with my cycling shirts you can get nice zipper merino wool 95% cycling tops cheep cool thing is they have longer sleeves with thumb holes and the tail of the shirt is longer and has the gripping elastic trim on it so they wont ride up and the sleves wont either. plus winter time cycling is not very popular and you can find deals now I didnt find any of the cycling stuff but if you register you get an extra 20% off the higher the number the warmer it is.

Good stuff man. I might give one of those a try. At least if I don't like it I can wear it around casually.

This weekend while sitting in a treestand at mid 20 degree temps I had the following on:
1. Cabela's baselayers (the more expensive ones, still cheaper than UA)
2. Nike DriFit Fleece
3. Rocky Scent IQ Atomic
4. Columbia wool overalls
I own UA outerwear but won't buy anymore. I will try the baselayers at some point.

Well this didn't help a whole lot. If UA isn't worth the money, what is another brand that is as warm or warmer and with similar thickness?
Posted on 11/17/14 at 8:09 pm to 07Tiger
the ua is worth the money. Some people just want to hate if they dont want to spend the money on it. Or they have another brand they are loyal to. Like the ones on here who are all about ford and hate on anything chevy, those are also the ones who think tikka is the best thing since sliced bread and there is nothing else, and that their igloo is just as good as a yeti. The ua is fine clothing, you will be fine

quote:That seems like an awful lot. I wear a Patagonia thinsulate-type underwear (top and bottom) and some good insulated coveralls and am very comfortable in sub 30 degree weather- even when I'm fishing for sacs.
