The problem is tree huggers.
My dad was in charge of timber appraisal and special use permits of a National Forest.
The Forest Service falls under the USDA but there are so many hoops to jump through. The Forest Service has been hamstring by tree huggers for well over 40 years.

The pine beetle outbreak didn’t start on only FS lands

When has the USFS ever had a profit/economic motive?
Can’t sell timber if there is no market for it Can’t even give it away sometimes There are timber sales that go out to buyers that do not even receive a bid. So that stand of timber just sits there without getting thinned

Homochitto has been dealing with beetles for a decade. Well before the drought. Certainly hasn't made anything better though. Certain parts of the forest they just cutting several acres of beautiful timber pines and letting them lay. Guess its too small of tracts plus some already dead pines to attract a buyer. Wild to see though.

He better get the mills back up and running too. I know timber guys struggle to get enough loads in the mills now.

we already log national forests, used to log with my FIL in MS, what this probably actually means is they are going to expand the number of sales;
National Parks are trees that are not usually logged
