Ok, I have a craftsman tool chest, and at the moment all of my tools are just kind of thrown in there and what not, mostly organized, like screwdrivers, wrenched etc. but I wanted to clean it up a bit if at all possible.

I was thinking maybe trying to find some packaging foam or something and maybe cut out the shapes?

Any suggestions?

3M makes a blue, thin-line tape for laying pinstripes. You can make an outline of each tool with it on the bottom of the drawer, kinda like a chalk outline of a crime scene.

Yeah, but I was thinking like something that would hold them in place when I open/close the drawers. They would just slide around with the tape.

They had some shite like that at grainger. I don't remember what they wanted for it though.

I've seen someone take the cheap thin memory foam toppers and cut them to drawer size. It was a large Matco box but it worked for him on sliding around

You can't just get the plastic wrench holders and metal socket holders? They have similar stuff for screwdrivers.

I have all of my wrenches in the plastic cases they came in, but they won't all fit in my toolbox so they just hang out wherever I put them. The regular sockets are in those metal holders and the extended sockets just roll around, but I planned on getting those plastic holders that keep them straight up in the air. Random stuff like hammers, Torx and hex bits, sandpaper, and just anything laying around in the top of the toolbox.

Got a couple of those Husky canvas bags for pliers, screwdrivers, and specialty tools. It is good because I can just carry the bag anywhere. I have a complete other set of tools for the house.

When people use foam cut-outs, it limits the space in the box and you just can't put everything you need it in. I guess you could look at Grainger for the foam, or you might think of looking at Pelican foam

I rarely take my tools anywhere, but I have two sets for if I do need to take them somewhere, obviously not two completely identical sets, but I have wrenched and whatnot in a smaller toolbox that I can grab and go for the ever prevalent SHTF scenario, and for just when people need me to come over and help them (rarely).

Tools are like panties to me. I just feel naked if I leave home without them. I have most of them in the truck 100% of the time.

But yeah, Sears has those little plastic wrench holders for cheap and metal socket holders as well. The extended sockets are what is the biggest problem, but if you keep your box stationary, just get one of those plastic holders that stands them straight up. Unless you have a taller lid on your box, it won't close

Same material is available as a workout matt in a large 6 ft by 12 ft roll at academy for $20. Then you just cut to fit.

As for organization I have a 1/4 in drawer, 3/8 drawer, 1/2 drawer, and 3/4 drawer.
I use these for the sockets.
As for cutting out places for the tools to sit in..... You will lose a lot of valuable space. With these socket holders your deep and shallow will lay down without having to use the top of your box just for sockets.

the ones I had like that wouldnt hold the sockets from falling out ]magnet not strong enough]

so if you want to take all of the sockets its a pain in the arse cause they wont stay secured.

OP if you want to be able to remove the whole set I would recommend the type you twist to secure socket

I use these [Ima greasemonkey]

My tool box at home used to be my tool box at work. I had to have all tools shadowed so I used the foam inserts from Sears. They sell a couple different sizes that will fit perfectly in any Craftsman tool box you have. Lay some masking tape down, trace out where you want the tools, then take a razor blade, or dremmel or soldering iron, and cut the holes out for the tools. It takes a while, but it organizes very well.

This is what I use for standard sockets
LINK

This is what I use for metric
LINK

As far as extended sockets, use this if you want mobility LINK, and or this if you are just gonna keep them stationary LINK

These are the wrench holders
LINK. There are much cheaper ones that I have used and I know they hold well, just can't find them on the website.

Can't find the screwdriver holders, but you can either keep them in a separate droor, or get a magnetic holder and stick them to the side of the box if you done have that many.

Pliers, well, just do what you want depending on the amount of pliers you have. There isn't a way to hold pliers. I probably have 30 different pliers and just keep them all in a bag. You might not have that many and can just stuff them somewhere useful

Judging from how easily I did the brake work on my four Wheeler yesterday, I could give grease monkey a run for his money in the four wheeler repair bidness
