Picked up some Buck Buster the other day. Should I wait a few more weeks to put it down? Lots of rain in the forecast the next few weeks here in Mississippi.

Probably so because if we get a dry hot spell it'll all burn up quick

Ideal time down here is Octoberish

My rule of thumb is to plant when it stops getting into the 90's.

We are in Liberty, MS and were discussing the same thing. Probably in a month I guess. First year for us so we planted summer plots so that’s kicking right now.

I’m a few minutes north of Liberty. I plant before a rain in the first week or 2 of October.
I used to plant in September and had to replant more than once. No issues since moving it back a little.

Go ahead and plant baw, won't be an inch of rain come through there if u do. Last two or three years planted in September and then it just stops raining. I'm not planting till late October or early November. Our deer don't hit the plots good until late anyway.

Last thing you want is seeds to germinate then dry out. That and army worms. Id wait till mid to late Oct if you don't need them for bow season.

If you plant now, plant cow peas

Love for it to be up for bow season. Guess it’s a game either way.

If you plant before October there is a really good chance it doesn't make it. September seems to be a dry month every year. We've learned the hard way a few times. Excellent hog hunting though.

I planted a couple of small bow plots last weekend but they’re in spots that stay kinda moist. We won’t plant the bigger places til mid to late September. Always try to plant a couple small bow plots during August or early Sept in case the acorns don’t cooperate

We’re planting tomorrow in northwest Rapides. Our rut is the end of October, first week of November. Then, hunting gets bleak. If we wait, the plots won’t be up in time to hold the does in the area. Every year is a crapshoot with rain, but October is the driest month in La.

My BIL and I have replanted our summer plots 3 times this year. Soybeans and overtime the damn pigs tear up the plot. Finally set some traps and have caught 12 in last week and his 2 boys have killed 1 each. Not planting again until fall plant once we have gotten more of the pigs.

We always catch a dry spell so I wait well into October when temps are much lower.

Now would be good time to plant soybeans or cowpeas if you want a bow season plot. Problem is it needs to be quite large area or it will get mowed down.

Army worms are a consideration.

This is true. We got burned in 2015 and 2016 with 2-3 week dry spells from mid Sept to mid October. Now we wait till the first good rain chance in October.
Also I agree with what others have said. Plant a warm season plot like cow peas now if you want to bow hunt over it.

Im up here in Piedmont of NC I wont plant till september at least. My key is waiting on first tropical storm or hurricane to come through. Plant a day or two before and you will be getting a weeks worth of moisture and warmth. This is a perfect environment for germination. The ground will stay wet for a couple weeks at least until the plants get to the point that they can defeat potential late heat.

I don't hunt food plots for bow season or anytime really unless I'm hunting a shooting house with my daughter...food plots for us are just a supplemental feeding not a place to really hunt...we hunt the woods and cut overs unless taking a kid to hunt a box stand...and even so, we have a bunch of double ladders set out in the woods to put our kids on better deer.

so we plant late.

Ended up not planting. Did some dragging before the monsoon. I’m ready for a break in this heat!
