Today In The Stand

Morning was slow, with a few foes coming and going. Then this afternoon I got the surprise of the season.
Around 4:30 I’m watching two fox squirrels playing on the ground. Haven’t seen a thing when they suddenly hauled tail and back up the nearest tree. Then I heard something walking.
I turned to look over my shoulder and couldn’t believe my eyes. Standing in an old scrape was a buck that I’m going to say conservatively will score 165. No trail camera pictures of him, never seen him from the stand. The largest buck I’ve personally ever seen in Louisiana on the hoof.
He was already in bow range, probably 40 yards, but eventually came to 14.5, broadside. I tried every way to put the pin on his shoulder and couldn’t for tree limbs. At one point I could have forced one in, but couldn’t bring myself to let it fly.
He never spooked, never knew I was there. He never gave me anything close to a shot after that one small hole. I’ll be back tomorrow morning. Hope he comes back through.

Personally, I would title this “Why I don’t Bow Hunt”. Hope he comes back, man.

Awesome! What a sight and what amazing restraint. You are a great example of a true sportsman! I do pray you see him again:-)

What an incredible deer hunting experience. Whether you ever see him again or not, the vision of that mature buck in bow range will be there for the rest of your days.
How close to the river are you hunting?

Great story and yes bow hunting is every emotion packed inside of mere seconds. I can see why some guys seek the thrill but for me its mostly disappointment in myself
Good luck OP. Looking forward to seeing that you got him

He was probably cruising looking for a late doe coming in heat, if he found one he may be around if not he is long gone.

Isn't it amazing the luck (not to mention the incredible instincts to survive) that a mature buck has? This season I shot a mature 11 pt that crept in after a group of does had passed just 5 minutes previous. He was literally right under my stand when I shot and he fell immediately at the foot of my ladderstand.
Five minutes later, as I was enjoying the post shot experience, a real monster (biggest buck I have ever seen in 50 years of deer hunting - he dwarfed the first buck!) crept in on the same path and walked right up to his buddy to smell him. He then snuck off after the does with impunity. I had never seen this beast before and probably never will again.
Some of you (like me) would have probably thought about shooting that buck right then and there, but I respect the law and especially the bounty that the Lord had already given me. I couldn't have even if I wanted to, I had failed to eject the spent round and load a new one when I saw the first buck drop immediately.
That beast was truly lucky.

I would have looked at it as the Lord sending me 2. Couldn't pass on the second and disrespect his graciousness.

My dad always said “deer don’t get that big around here by being stupid”

Didn’t see him this morning.

This is the best hunt you could hope for. For the past 5 years, I have selected a single deer to kill or nothing! I let my GF and other family shoot the meat…but a personal hunt after (1) single deer is the most rewarding hunt you will ever have. It’s extremely difficult and very humbling…but when it comes together, you won’t do it any other way. I’m 1 for 5…so…it’s hard!

Went into a new area that morning and climbed for a shot to a good trail. As they often do, this buck came from the last direction I anticipated.

Could be. Rifle shot just before dark last night on the adjoining property. Didn’t hunt this morning, but it wouldn’t surprise me. That deer was looking for hot does.

You did the right thing
Go make a mock scrape on his path and throw some buck piss on it
You’ll bust him buddy
