a 308 is deadly way past 200 yrds.

Yes it is for sure but you have to make a lot less corrections with a 270,30-06 past 200 than you do with a 308. My 270 1/2 inch high at 100 puts me dead on at 220, you cant do that with a 308.

i have browsed this site a few times and find it pretty interesting regarding ballistics on different calibers.

What??
You realize the .308 is a shortened .30-06 right?
ballistics aren't that far off and that the .308 was and might still be the military's sniper round.
Anyway, I got a Weatherby Vanguard in .257 weatherby last year and that gun is a tack driver.
I also bought a T/C Encore in .308 and it is a very accurate gun as well, plus if I want another option all I have to do is buy a new scope and barrel.

Using the same bullet a .30-06 drops 8.5 inches at 300yds and the .308 drops 8.8
at 400yds the .30-06 drops 25 the .308 26.2
That is not significant.

K guess I should have specified that, 270 is flatter shooting also I hand load so should take that into effect also.

I have a Rem 700 in 30-06, love it. My brother has same gun in 270, half the recoil, love it more. Rem 700 is top notch, not just for the money but at any price. Ruger M-77 is also solid. If I were doing over it probably be 7mm-08 or 270. 7mm-08 has similar performance to 270, similar recoil, and shorter quicker bolt throw. Good Luck.

Just FYI....do not skimp on the scope!!!! Its a shame seeing such a nice rifle and then the guy has a crappy scope and complains about the lack of light gathering or it fogging up. My suggestion is that your not trying to be a Marine Sniper so any guns mentioned will be just fine...its a deer with a large kill zone, but trust me spend money on a quality scope!!!!

I agree, Spend as much or more on your scope than you do on your rifle.

Tikka T3 .300 win mag bolt action. absolutely the best rifle i've ever shot. you can reach out and get em with this monster.

another vote for the tikka t3. my .270wsm was a tack driver out of the box. it is really impressive w/ reloads. not to bad on the pocket book either.

get a Rem 700 action, Bell & Carlson Medalist Tactical A5 stock, and your choice of bbl. use the remaining 200-300 for glass. or if youre lazy see if this guy is still selling his frickin Cool Rifle
