Sorry to hear about Grady.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are chill with family and not with strangers plus they don't mind staying outside a lot. German Shepards obviously a good choice, instinctively protective.

I'm in the same situation as you, looking for a new dog and it will be a Doberman. Mainly because of their intelligence and protective instincts, plus will be inside a lot, minimal shedding vs a German Shepard.

Good luck.

Negatives, they have three coats. Sheds a lot. Get the pet hot room an and limit his roaming area in the house.

He was rough before training. They want to jump and bump into you.

They also gently use their mouth to direct you to pet them. That can intimidate some.

I've heard that Pyrenees are bad to wonder if they don't have a herd.

That may not be accurate but I have heard that. We had one show up at my farm this summer. He stuck around for a couple of weeks (I took him food and water) and then left.

One of my friends has one. They had to put him on prozac because of how anxious he was getting. He bought a couple of goats and chickens, the dog is off the meds and fine now.

First of all, sorry to hear this.
2 - What a POS for not letting you know they hit your dog. I have had to do it. Awful, but the right thing to do.

SIL has a pyrenese mix and 2 kids under 4. No issues with the kids. Gentle yet a great guard dog of the house and yard. I would get one in a heartbeat. Smart and easy to train. I would lean towards a pound/mix though. Had really good luck with adopted dogs.

Good looking boy. Sorry about your loss. You get attached.
I live back off the road. I have 2 dogs to protect me from the riffraff.
Both are females. My big girl is an American Bulldog. 88 lbs. Great dogs. Smart. Powerful. Protective of her yard and me. Loves kids. She stays in the house at night and lets me know when there are boogers outside. My little bitty is a Jagd Terrier. 22 lbs. Greased lightning. Nothing gets by her. Always hunting. I haven’t seen a snake or rodent in several years. My squirrel dog. Very protective of her yard and me. Follows me everywhere. She stays in the house at night.
I think 2 dogs are better than one. My combination of always on point and muscle for backup is a huge deterrent.

I'd seriously consider a Doberman. Not sure why they never come up in these conversations. Very intelligent, very protective of children and property, shedding is much less of an issue than similar breeds, not many health issues.

Our next dog we get we plan to leave indoors at least 80% of the time. And we want another larger sized dog. Obviously great with kids but one that isn’t fricking around with riff raff up and down our road and in our yard at night potentially.
lots of people have mentioned some great breeds but I grew up with bullmastiffs and Rottweilers and they were great.

With that much property I would get a catahoula that stays outside and a then a different dog for inside. Do not put a catahoula puppy in your house unsupervised lol
