Just found out they make a full size with an 18" barrel. That'd be the route to go for a home defense gun IMO.
This is the exact 870 I have for home defense. It's basic as hell but will do what I need it to do when I need it. 5 rounds of 00 Buck helps me sleep well at night.

That would certainly be my choice. 18" barrel with a cylinder choke and a regular stock is perfect IMO.
Wouldn't make a bad rabbit gun either.

If you buy it, put a damn stock on it. Stockless shotguns are only practical for breaching doors. Besides that, you can't aim it because it'll break your face. And besides that, it'll break your wrist since all the recoil goes into it.
Put a stock on it if you're gonna buy it.

It's amazing how much lighter it is toting the 18" around the woods compared to your standard hunting shotgun. Taking that length off the barrel completely changes the balance of it.
EDIT: I will say this though... My only con of the standard 870 express is that the finish absolutely sucks. I took mine duck hunting once and it was rusty the next day even though I dried it off. I'll be looking to get it dipped or recoated in cerakote really soon.

I had that problem with mine when it was new. The finish sucked arse and it was a rust bomb every time I came out the house.
After about a year of use it got right though. There's no rust on it and it doesn't rust any easier than anything else I have. The finish is much slicker now too than it was new. I guess it just needed some miles on it.
Eta: now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure it quit rusting after I cleaned the whole thing with soapy boiling water after it got dropped in the swamp.

Not a fan of all that tacticool stuff but it is still an 870. Hard to beat an 870. Love my wingmaster and its 18"

The old (early 80's) police 870's are just about as good as you can do.
The new marine magnum is pretty damn awesome as well, but they cost a whollleeeeeee bunch.

This. I traded a full sized 870 for a youth and couldn't be happier. Also a good home defense solution for smaller framed people who don't want to shoot a 12.

Many people hit is on the head.
I cannot stand foregrips or pistol grips on shotguns.
Would be a rough day at the range shooting that gun.
Finding an old police trade in is my recommended route but since Dec, those guns disappear as fast as they are listed.
