that's what my coworker said. he said the colleges and high school bass teams have pieced together boats. mainly due to the lack of funds each school can obtain. they're not actual teams associated with the school's athletic department so they don't get the same benefits as the football/baseball/basketball teams would. it's more of club really. by the way, my coworker is a coach for his daughters high school.

You'll have a hard time making me believe that the UF bass team, located in the best bass fishery in the country/world, has a pieced-together boat with a lack of funding.

Noticed. Thats crap.

I can navigate a boat like most, but I freaking hate trying to get out of someone elses wake. makes me nervous as hell.

The comments say it was a mechanical failure... more specifically that the steering cable broke. Not sure if that's what happened, but that is what is being said.

I dont believe that for a second. Sounds like they are trying to hide some embarrassment.

That's how I think LSU is and I'm sure most colleges. They use their own shite and have a few sponsors.

What's embarrassing about that?

they may be more well off than a high school, but from what i'm being told, colleges struggle somewhat. fishing teams are considered to be clubs instead of a branch of the athletic department. therefore, they won't receive all the funding that they probably should or could get. most of their money would come from sponsors.

and after they spend that money on depth finders and rods and lures and gas for their trucks AND boats, how much money is going to be left for a $20k bass boat.

If by skeeter you mean Triton then you are correct.

That's not a old run down pieced together rig they are running.

Maybe 'embarrassment' is the wrong word. Looks to me like they lost control of the situation...doesn't it to you? And now trying to blame a mech failure.

Luckily it doesn't matter what me or you believe. Those actually reporting on it say it was a mechanical failure. Here's more info on what supposedly failed:

quote:

Joe Landry It was a lock tight nut, that came off of the hydraulic steering. Which caused the assembly to come apart.

Take it for what it's worth.

ETA - this is actually coming from the 2 guys that were in the boat. I have no idea if they are telling the truth or not.

Have to agree, no way is that mechanical failure. That is just another example of an inexperienced driver trying to cross another boats wake with the engine trimmed too high.....the nose came down and bit making the boat hook. Regardless, glad everyone came out ok.

Agreed and I'm not trying to come off as an arse or anything, so hopefully it wasn't taken that way.

Also, the guys on the boat said even though it doesn't show it in the video, several of the boats turned around and checked on them.

The majority, maybe even all college fishing teams use privately owned boats by the students themselves. So unless your dad has a nice boat you can use, most college fisherman aren't going to have expensive brand new boats.

I'm sure most colleges do use less than ideal boats, but I'm friends with one of the guys from UF that won the national tourney 2 years in a row a few years back and they won brand new boats both years I believe. Those boats go straight to the clubs. So the UF team was using far from sub par boats here. The video is obvious though.

If you are going 60 mph and not wearing a vest You are an idiot. It's one thing at 25mph, but in something like a bass boat is crazy.
