5 reds in catfish lake

Nice, I’ve fished it about half a dozen times and only caught fish around the pumping station
Seems like there would be fish everywhere but it’s tough to find em

yeah, buddy and I caught a bunch of nice reds on spoons fishing grass in Hopedale. I tried to screw up the trip by throwing plastics, etc, but went back to the spoon.

I'm not a Spoon guy at all. Which one do you use? I may have to try again.

The gold ones.

just kidding...I don't have a preferred brand. Just 1/4 ounce gold spoon. I have caught more reds in the marsh on that than any other bait.

Oh yeah...weedless...single hook.

1/4 oz Johnson Silver Minnow weedless gold. Simple and effective.

I stopped using "the secret" spoons from H&H when I had hooks break off of 2 of them.

I use these also, but only if I'm reeling in grass. My main go-to gold spoon is the 1/4 oz Johnson sprite

The multiple threads on drowning deaths due to no PFD have got me re-examining what I what I wear while fishing from my kayak.

Currently, I wear an inflatable PFD but have the canister set for manual pull and not automatic. I thought that with the amount of water splashing and limited space when fishing, there is a high chance of accidental inflation. I’ve fished mostly PAC, but also Reggio, Hopedale and around the Old Landing in Covington. I can swim but I’m no triathlete.

What’s y’all opinion on setting your inflatable to automatic while kayak fishing?

I wear a manual. IMO you're perfectly fine with a manual in a kayak because only real chance of being knocked unconscious and not being able to pull the inflation tab is a collision with a boat. But as long as you listen for boat traffic and make sure you're taking steps to be seen (stand up when you hear a boat coming, bright visible color clothing). If the boat is headed right at you and doesn't look like he sees you, then pull the tab. If you end up in the water for any other reason, you should easily be able to pull the tab.

Now if I had a bass boat, I'd want an automatic since you can lose control suddenly and end up ejected and unconscious before you even know what happened.

I was afraid of something similar happening but in 3+ years of using it set to automatic it never has.

While I hope this never happens the thought of having some sort of medical emergency quickly that doesn't allow for me to pull the rip cord terrifies me. The thought of being found dead floating face down wearing a PFD that I never inflated makes me keep it set to automatic.

There are some automatic inflatables that have a water pressure sensor that triggers it to inflate when it detects being submerged under a few inches of water. Prevents unwanted inflation from getting wet in rain or just splash.

I tossed mine on the bank the other day on the San Marcos river as I was getting off the water. Damn thing went off from a tiny puddle.

I know a guy who was coming into the shore, took his auto pfd off and tossed it in the hatch of his PA, a few seconds later the thing went off. Scared him so bad he fell in the water .

In the kayak I use a manual inflate.

Just FYI all Hobie prices will go up 5% starting June 15th. Looks like the price increase is due to the Chinese tariffs. So if you're needing some Hobie gear, get it now.
