Haha I was exaggerating a little. It's a decent rod. It's just not as good as other rods in its class (method, NRX, meridian). It has good feel but it's a pretty flimsy and I find that I lose energy pretty easily (see: medicocre caster). IMO that rod struggles with distance moreso than any of the others listed, which doesn't really matter for redfish, but if I'm spending that kind of money on a rod then I want something good across all scenarios.

They also break a lot. Orvis replaces them but you can be without your rod for weeks while they send it in and replace it. One of my friends has broken several in less than two years, and he's not really careless with the rod.

Damn, that's brutal. I don't really have anything bad to say about the Helios 2 but I can see where it may not be a good fit for some. Most of mine are 1 piece rods so I haven't experienced any breakage and I like to pull hard. Not a big fan of the Sage Method though, find it to be a little broom sticky for my tastes. Of course the NRX and Meridian are fantastic. I don't anticipate giving up my Orvis rods but if I were to make the move it would be to the Scott Meridian or T&T Solar. The T&T is a bad arse stick.

A friend gave me his Marshfly Back country to try out and I kind of like it a lot. For $300 it's fantastic. Haven't bothered to chase down who they are buying their blanks from but whomever they are using must be building them in the US. I've used the Marshfly Journeyman as well and enjoyed it despite the shitty name. If I only wanted to spend $300, I would be looking at Marshfly out of Texas, damn nice rod.

Have you ever broken a H2? I give Orvis products a fair amount of shite, but I was really surprised at the amount of times he broke that H2. It's really not bad because Orvis' warranty is legit, but it's annoying when you're without a rod for a couple weeks.

I agree. I feel the same way about the NRX. It's a badass rod, but it's too stiff for me. I can cast further with that rod than probably any of the others listed, but I have a hard time generating enough line speed to get solid feel on short shots.

Do you like the Back Country better than the BVK? I seem to remember you saying you didn't like the BVK very much. I have no experience with any of the Marshfly rods.

Barf I think you might be the only person I have heard of having cast both the Marshfly rods. Howd you like the hardware on them as far as grip, reel seat, and guides? Their website says Alps seat and snake river guides which are top of the line.

If we are talking 8 wt rods then I'm no a BVK fan. The 6wt I like a lot.

There is no denying The BVK's ability to hold it's own against rods 2 and 3 times it's price point. It's just not a rod that I care for. The 8wt BVK feels more like a really fast 7 wt to me but that could have more to do with the way I had it lined.

I've broken the H2 four piece but not the 1 piece. I high sticked a fish that ran under the boat, I couldn't imagine any 8wt rod surviving that mistake.

The Backcountry I feel is a better made rod than the BVK but it's much more moderate in it's action, not really fair to compare the two. Both are great but the BVK just isn't for me.

As far as I can tell Marshfly is very well built. I don't find the hardware to be any better or worse than most rods in that price range. The finish work is more important to me than brand of hardware and the Marshfly rod is finished very very well.

Let me add that the only reason I became an H2 fan is because I was able to walk into a shop and cast one with a few different lines before buying one. I've had lots of demo rods but sometimes It takes a while to get my hands on one.

If the fly shop carried Loomis, Scott, or Thomas and Thomas things may have turned out differently. Once you reach the upper echelon of fly rods the little things start to really stand out and they are all a little bit different but its not so much a matter of one being better than the other.

Reels are the same way. I prefer solid frame, cork drag reels. The stacked carbon disk drag reels are nice but I'm just stuck on the Tibor. Doesn't make the Tibor better than the Nautilus or Hatch.

I need to take a picture of 6wt and 8wts.

They are Sage RplXi's that i built many years ago. I got to where I don't like snake guides and used fuji titanium with cermet inserts.

The blank is dark blue and with the titanium, it looks amazing. Have them both paired with fuji titanium reel seats. They are incredibly light.
The 6wt is paired with the Tibor Freestone (still not selling it Barf)
and the 8wt is a Bauer M4.

I love those rods.

Finally ordered a rod to put on the hydros IV I bought last year. Got the Clearwater 909-4, which I know isn't the cream of the crop by any means but I'm hoping it can hold up to the redfish and specks I plan on encountering

Been practicing casting in the backyard with my cheapo 5 weight and have gotten a lot better, hopefully that transitions well to the heavier set up. I'm dying to catch a redfish on the fly

I think the heavier lines are easier to cast.

Congrats on the new rod. Good luck!

Thanks man. I'm hoping the rod itself will lend towards better casting too. Like I said, I know that the Orvis Clearwater is an entry level rod- but when you're practicing on an $80 Daiwa combo setup, it has to be easier than that right?

First time fishing out of a yak (sitting down) and first fish on my fly rod, ended up catching 6 (missed a lot of small ones). 19in fish (not pictured) rolled and ended up being foul hooked, thought it was a pig at first. I don't think I'll fish with conventional tackle at night anymore as long as the weather permits, havent been that excited catching trout in a long time

Where is the OB recommend place in the Baton Rouge area to get fly fishing stuff and or advice. I got a fly setup for Father's Day and I'm not too up on all the technical stuff. I have fly fished a lot growing up. We pretty much just fished for bream and stuff like that. I haven't been fly fishing in probably 12 or so years now though. I need to get some leader and tippet material.
This tapered leader and tippet is new to me back in the day I remember just using straight string connected to the floating line. lol

Heading to Jackson Hole in August and plan on booking a fishing trip one day. Any suggestions on guides? I have recently picked up a fly rod, and started practicing so I can be proficient before August. Taking a trip on the White River Saturday to fly cast for trout for the first time so it should be interesting.

I hear you. Fish on the fly are fun.

I was able to put another species on my list - The American Shad. Largest in the herring family. Apparently they were transplanted from the east coast at the same time the striper were.
