I was able to put another species on my list - The American Shad. Largest in the herring family. Apparently they were transplanted from the east coast at the same time the striper were.

You fishing the American River?

The shad don't get up that high in the American. The dams they built had no fish ladders everything (that comes in and out to spawn) stops just below Natoma. Placerville is pretty country.

Sorry no experience in Jackson hole. Please bring us a report though.

A very good idea to work on it this summer.

I ended up booking thru the place we are staying, prices were on par with what I had seen, and they are an Orvis endorsed outfitter. I fished in the pond at office late yesterday and managed a big bluegill on a popper. Running up to the Spring River this afternoon to see if I can catch a rainbow nymphing, then taking a trip on the White Saturday. So I should have my first trout on the fly by end of the week if not by the end of the day. Finally going to take advantage and fly fish of all this trout water relatively close.

Weather permitting I'm going to take my 5 weight and 9 weight to the lake Saturday and try to catch anything at all from the bank

The particular lake isn't loaded with fish by any means but I'd be thrilled to pull out a bass of any size. My fly cherry is ready to be popped

Has anyone ever fly fished off the beach in Destin?

I go down there a few times a year and have been think about hitting it early morning before crowds are out.

Yep. You will have your best shot at good fishing if you can get away from the people. Not just get out there early but get away from them entirely. There are some excellent flats on the bay side that can be accessed by foot. Easy walking on those flats and enough shots at specs and redfish to keep you occupied.

Depending on when you are there you will have good shots at pompano and redfish in the surf as well some whiting and a few other species. I like to keep a haywire handy for shots are spinner sharks. Tie a foot or so of heavy mono to the haywire and pre tie a clinch knot so you can just slip it over the shank of the fly for quick shots. Spinners jump like crazy, lots of fun.

Beach side I like something like a sand flea. I usually use a gold charlie or gotcha. Sometimes a natural colored crab fly will do the trick. Go ahead and throw a few baitfish patterns in your pocket just in case. A big popper has never hurt anybody either. I like a clear intermediate fly line for the surf. I usually overline my 8wt for the destin surf.

We posted up some links to some amazing looking sand fleas a couple months back. Let us know how it goes and take some pics. I've never fished off the beach with a fly rod

I assume you're talking the backside of okaloosa island? Or back up into the bay itself? Interested in any wade spots because I'll be down there this weekend helping my parents move and probably won't have a trailer by then to haul my yaks.

Side note: I have a quarterly bonus on the way so I did the only logical thing to do and got another saltwater setup to partner with my orvis rig. Primary target will be redfish on the flats in the panhandle, but I wanted something that could handle a trip to the keys down the road.

Went with a Scott Meridian 909-4 and a Hatch Finatic 7 plus for the reel. Hoping it's all here by the weekend

Nice pics as always. Here's a few from Saturday up at the salmon river. Ended up with a bunch of little smallmouth. Couldn't seem to find any big ones but they were fun anyway. Some browns too. Few reports of guys catching summer run atlantic salmon but I didn't manage to hook into one or see anyone do it either.

Heading back to La this weekend and want to try and get a trip to Reggio in on Sunday. Will probably be conventional rod and reel, but would I break a 5wt Clearwater rod and reel on a red?
