How would a 4# rod setup handle rat redfish say 18" average

It's a bream/ bass setup but I would like to try it on some specs or reds at night

I know that I would have to give them a lot of line and baby one into a net. Just a thought

Pretty sure the leader line (not sure if that's the right terminology) is 6# test which isn't shite for a red but I think it'd be a hell of fight

If you managed to keep the fish on I'd have to assume it would be near death by the time you landed it. Most use an 8 wt for reds - let us know how it goes

Anyone use a sling? Looking to moving to something different with a bit more carry space. Started out looking at the Fishpond or even the LL Bean, but think I may go with a Vedavoo.

I use a Simms and really enjoy it. I'll never use anything other than sling again.

Do you cast right handed? Does it bother you to cast much with it on if you have any weight in it? I sometimes carry a nice camera with me.

One reason I'm really considering the Vedavoo you can get it for your left shoulder.

Yes, right handed. Never have noticed it when casting even when packing a fair amount of stuff. I don't know how much a nice camera weighs so I also couldn't comment on if that amount of weight would be an issue. Most I pack is water bottle, rain jacket, and fly boxes/leaders/tippet

The left shoulder things does seem like a good idea adn playing it safe though.

my wife has the ll bean, it's nice.

i used a simms waypoint forever (even though it would give me shoulder, back and neck pain) until i got the orvis ultralight vest for by birthday. haven't looked back since then, super light construction, breathable, tons of pockets and pocket space, and a clip on the back/neck to connect a net. a great piece of equipment.

Thanks, I pulled the trigger on the Vedavoo after talking to some people that have the Vedavoo. I will post a review when I get it.

Please do, I’m curious as to how others like their sling. Looks like a great design...just not sure how much gear it can handle.

Not looking for you to give up the spot. It's been almost 20 year since I did a lot of fishing in that part of the world, and the aforementioned creek was the first one that popped into my head.

That fish is a MONSTER for Western NC.

How is that creek? I’ve never fished it - requires a permit right?

Bullhead Creek, the trophy stream, is patterned after the old English “beat” system. An angler pays to fish one of the eight beats or sections of the stream and is guaranteed exclusivity to that particular section. If the fisher wants to move to another section, he pays an additional fee and is again guaranteed exclusivity. Beats cannot be reserved; they’re all first-come, first-served.

No worries about taking my spot hahaha this fish was taken in the Boone/West Jefferson area.

It's a freaking monster man probably will never catch a fish like this in my life again.

Aubie - the last time I fished Bullhead it had been neglected for a while, and the big fish had been either poached or washed out by flooding. It is good way to get away from the crowds (fish some of the longer/upper sections) but the fishing was marginal and the state of the trail was a clear indication that the park is not maintaining it like they used to. You may still catch a few wild fish in tight quarters.

I had heard similar reports about it from afar, didn't know if they were true or not.

And never say never again. 20+ years ago, I caught a 7 lb brown on a trib of the Watauga above the dam (on a 7' 4wt to boot). They are out there.

Heading to fish the lower gunnison and black canyon in mid September.

Beginner fly fishermen. Anyone ever been? Any suggestions?

Got the Vedavoo, ended up getting the beast because I wanted the pack room. It’s plenty big for what I wanted, materials leave a bit lacking, but it seems to be made well. I still kinda like the design of the fishpond, but having the left shoulder strap is nice and this one definitely stays on my back well in my yard tests. Until I get some stream tests, I can’t really recommend this type of money on it so far. It’s a lot of money, but use to that with fly gear.
