I've seen them in some boat stores browsing recently, they sure look to do great things on the packaging but not sure if it's bullshite. They aren't too expensive either.

Thoughts.

They work great for getting out of the hole. I had a closed bow ski boat and I mounted a Whale Tail on it. In addition to making a helluva step it worked to pull the nose down under full throttle acceleration. Cuts down on cavitation at high speeds as well. I had one on an old Johnson 115.

The cost of one compared to adding trimtabs is a big savings. They do help a small boat get up on plane faster,BUT. And yes, there is a BUT. One does loose top end speed due to extra drag in the water.

Now comparing them with trimtabs, both help you get up on plan, but one can raise the tabs to were you don't have any drag or shift/level out the boat when one has to much weight to one side.

IF your rig is set up properly you do not need this. These are usually seen on rigs like Gaston mentioned or rigs that are underpowered..

20 ft champion cc rated for a max rated 200hp, have a 150hp... don't want to lose top end speed though...

If you are having hole shot issues or fishing in shallow water that requires a flatter hole shot on your CC rig...then look into trim tabs...

An OB Baller wouldn't be caught dead with a whale tail on the back of their rig...

I remember the first time we had to actually use our trim tabs to get out of a lake...loved the damn things from that point forward.

Still had to back up and gun it a few times to dig out a hole before we had enough room to get on plane.

Any suggestions for a flat boat with a 25 on it to get up in shallow marsh?

Pretty sure they make a few deals for under 40hp motors.

My buddy has one on his sea pro but its not the old fashioned whale tales. Its almost in the shape of a upside down half pipe and only a few inches wider then the lower unit. The brand name slips my mind at the moment. He says he likes it a lot for running in shallow water

put your motor on a jack plate?
we hunt and fish out in reggio in a pro drive boat with a 40 Yamaha 4 stroke and its on a jack plate and we dont have many problems getting on step. Has to pretty shallow for us not to get going.

I used to have one on an underpowered boat they will help you plane out faster but that is really it.

I had one on my boat when I first got it. The jackplate was jacked wayyyyyyyy up and the boat was uncontrollable without it. Took it off and set the jackplate right and hauled arse.

With the jackplate how much higher should the outboard cavitation plate in relation to the bottom of the hull?

I set the cavitation plate about 1/4" higher than the bottom of the hull. It was 5" high when I got it.

on your boat you would be better off with Smart Tabs

100 dollar bill - hydrofoil is not the best application for your setup

They work- I have them and on several boat forums you will find boat owners everywhere rave about them

best money you will ever spend

Expensive tabs are for boats larger than 24 ft- foils for smaller boats

Smart tabs are your best option
