Putting fish through all that stress and agony just for personal enjoyment.

I rarely keep fish except for crappie and flounder. Never, ever release those.

That was slightly sarcastic. I don't know anyone who throws everything back. I release fish occasionally, but I love eating them more.

I usually only keep what I can eat that week. I don't like to fry fish very much and I like to grill it fresh. I can make one or two trout trips a year to fulfill any fish I'm willing to freeze to fry. Otherwise, I'm good only keeping what I eat soon.

Offshore is obviously a little different story. Granted I will try to eat my two snapper without freezing them.

Have you not been keeping up? I'm still learning which is why I'm knighting for the specks and the difficulty of catching them at times. If I was all knowing id probably not be in this thread.

I just think there's a huge misconception about speck fishing and the ease of it. There are about 3 months of the year where it gets pretty easy, but the rest of the year it's easy redfish to end the slump and keep up your ego.

The thing is, it's not apples to apples. One is not necessarily easier than the other and both are very different. Some would say anyone can put hunk of shrimp on a hook and eventually a redfish will swim by and eat it. While there may be some truth to that, it does not apply to sight fishing.

I couldn't jump in a boat and go catch trout. I would just get lost and burn a bunch of fuel. Same thing could be said if I handed you a fly rod and put you on the bow of my skiff.

Trout fishing takes a lot of skill. Sight fishing redfish takes a different kind of skill.

But I'm completely unknowing. I've been twice, both times with guides. I have to admit for a dry land feller from Cenla, I had more fun catching reds and trout than perch or bass.

I'm seriously considering buying a boat and making a trip or 4 a year south to try my luck.

Why? Lots of people, including fisherman think this way.

quote:

In some regions or countries you are simply not allowed to release fish, which are within the legal limits. Some areas in Germany have this rule and in Switzerland a law has been passed, which completely disallows C&R.

Saltwater fishing is pretty easy most of the time. Its just when things aren't going your way and you have to improvise, it tends to get a little difficult and requires your skill to shine through. But yeah, salt>fresh

ETA: I think someone needs to take me site fishing for reds. No kayaks please
