Tell me about Engine Oil

2009 Silverado 5.3 ~100k miles
Thinking about going back to changing my own oil since Time it Lube sold out to Valvoline and went up on their price $10.
What is a good reasonably priced engine oil that can be found locally. I've been reading some forums and a lot of people suggest Chevron Supreme, which is like only $12 bucks for 5g at Wally world.
thoughts on that stuff or anything else?

For non synthetic, I've always run Shell Rotella T. I know the 5 quart jugs are around 13 bucks at Walmart.
It is what I currently run in my 22+ year old truck. (10W 30)
It is all I've ever used for my non-synthetic applications.

Look for API SN on the bottle and stick to the OEM viscosity grade. Also stick to big names (havoline/chevron, penzoil, castrol, valvoline, mobil) and you will be fine.
If you want to get really crazy start taking oil samples and send a sample every oil change. You can see how the oil is holding up and also see wear and tear on your engine.
Pm me if you need more info, its my day job

I'm a Pennzoil man myself.

Also try to avoid switching brands every oil change. While its not likely, you can have a compatibility issue between different brands.

Read an article several years back about Engine oil. This was before the big push to synthetic. Said that all oil is tested and under such guidelines this day and age that there was little to no difference between oil so long as it has the API stamp of approval.
I have always liked Castrol and is all I used up until a few years ago. Bought a couple of Toyota's that came from the factory synthetic oil. I use Mobil 1 in them. I change my oil and rotate my tires every 5k. I have always had good luck with vehicles and never had an engine problem.
While oil is the lifeblood of the engine, etc.
Maintenance is the key to a vehicle lasting. Not just oil changes, but air filters, wheel alignments, shocks/struts, etc.
All this goes into making the vehicle last. Truly an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Year or so ago Toyota gave a fella a new Tundra to replace his 2007 that had 1 million miles on it. Here is a link to it. I remember him saying that Toyota did all his maintenance and that if they recommended it, he did it.

I use Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20, have no real reasoning as to why. From the little research I’ve done, it’s considered a good full syn.

Sounds good...but i would be scared to death to try to push that

Which ever oil meets the GM spec you need. Mobil Super synthetic is what I often buy when I find it on sale. Walmart's SuperTech synthetic is a solid oil too. I currently have O'Reilly's brand synthetic 10W-30 in my Ranger, which I believe is blended by Omni Specialty Packaging in Shreveport. Don't need to invest in boutique or top shelf oils unless you have a vehicle that benefits from them. Good air and oil filters are more important than choosing Pennzoil, Mobil, Castrol, Amsoil, RP, etc.

I've been doing it for about 14 yrs; no problem. AMSOIL also sells a 25K mile filter......1 and done

Use whatever meets the spec listed in the owners manual and change it at the specified intervals. Beyond that it really doesn’t matter.

Autozone oil specials are coming up in december. You should be able to buy enough for 10 oil changes for 30 bucks or so. Hell advance auto is closing out Quaker state for 6 bucks a gallon right now.
I run mobil1 in my stuff. I like 0w40 in Louisiana for most things. 4runner gets 0w30 with 10k intervals because its engine is perfectly clean at 200k.
Delo 15w50 in all tractors.
Valvoline VR1 in the high revving stuff.

This! As long as you are using the correct spec oil from a reasonable manufacturer, your filter is way more important.

I remember someone talking about that a while back (probably you lol). I'll have to set a reminder to check it out.
If i can end up saving $30 bucks i'll definitely do it.

I've been using Mobil 1 extended performance synthetic 5w30 on my 2011 Sierra 5.3L, and doing oil analysis every couple of oil changes. If you use a good filter and good synthetic oil you can go 15000 miles between changes.
I also bought a Fumoto drain plug valve so I can drain the oil in the flip of a switch. Highly recommend those.
