Any of you baws fished for or caught tarpon on the islands east of the river? Buddy of mine was with a guy last weekend who knew what he was doing and they hooked 4 or 5. Said they were not easy to spot but when they found some they didn't move much.

Sounds like a fun alternative to chasing trout and reds.

No idea how its done, would have to charter a boat I guess.

Tons of tarpon out of the mouth of the river just have to learn how to get on them

You can catch them on mullet at the rigs in shallower water

yep, some are as big as a man and they sure arent going to be caught off the bank

its a different type of fishing altogether like billfish and tuna

These guys were inside of Chandelier. Fishing them in 10-15 feet of water.

One hook up was with a fly rod.

Like any other fish you catch them various ways. Some troll for them. I know a guy who fishes live bait under balloon floats. Also you can catch them on soft plastic or hard baits. I think staging your boat right is probably the biggest key to it all after finding them.

I know it can be done. I'm also very interested in this subject. its very different and difficult fishing also seasonal. I just got back from Carrabelle FL which has a somewhat similar environment to here. 3 days 2 shots no hook ups its frustrating but when you land one damn it fun

Still Water Fishing Charters out of Long Beach started targeting them a few years ago and they have done very well. I know they landed one on a trout rod wade fishing, one of his clients broke the MS record, and think they have won the GI Tarpon Rodeo recently.

Chandeleur Islands. Watch Pelicans flying low over the water and they will fin when one flys over.

I believe you are correct. Cap Mc focuses on big trout, but then started on the tarpon side as well and has gotten a line on them for sure.

It’s rewarding. They’re probably there. It’s not like inshore fishing, I can hook up to zero or hook up to 5 and not land any, but there’s something about it. Kinda like turkey hunting

When we were down in the keys we’d see them come in at night around the dock. The ones that would cruise there were probably 30” or so. I saw a pair circling while fishing off the 7 mile bridge that were just massive. Looked like a pair of sharks

It’s a new thing finding them in shallow water here. They follow the mullet and pogies.

Incredible fish to encounter…… especially right off Lincoln beach

A guy my dad used to fish with sometimes used to go in Lake Pontchartrain between the airport and Little Woods. If I remember correctly, he used live mullets and drift fished for them. But that was years ago.

Ran the boat out that way on Father's day just to mess around a bit. No tarpon yet... I'll check back closer to August.

Definitely not new. Also definitely not going to be discussed online by those that know.

I've seen really old photos (like black and white) of them off them being caught out of MS Coast

I don’t ever recall people finding them in water shallower than 10 -15 feet in the old days

They are a lot more plentiful around here in deeper water. I'm also not convinced that the ones in the lake migrate anywhere. Some folks have been sight fishing them in shallower water for years though, particularly in Mississippi. I wasn't trying to be a dick or be that guy - there just isn't a whole lot about fishing in our area that everyone doesn't already know, so it'll be very difficult to find info about this online.
