Anyone else ever get a case of the azz at yourself for thinking too much about this? And winding up outsmarting yourself?
I know there must be some great stories on the OB regarding this.
My personal favorite was down in Ga. a few yrs ago. Was onto a 20" inside 8 pt who loved always giving me the slip. Finally had a good SW wind for an entire weekend to try and catch him slipping out of his bedding area. Fri aftn get up in a lock on I had on his rub line. Hour before dark he comes out on another trail 60 yds away, horns two different trees, makes a scrape and heads towards food plot.
Thinking I had his number I grab my climber the next aftn, get on this "new" trail, jack up a live oak after sawing off about 15 limbs to get some height, and get settled in.
Once again he pops out of the bedding area, only this time he's where I was at the afternoon before. Proceeds to walk UNDER my lock-on and head down his fav trail, while I sit cussing under my breath watching him walk away.
Boy on a lease next to us shot him the following wknd gun season on his first ever deer hunt. Scored 138 and change, was 20 1/4" on the inside.
God I love going with my gut instinct.

lesson learned
I would be hesitant to move and leave scent in another area

Sorta did the something a few years ago. Been hunting a large 8pt possibly a 10pt from a lock on stand. Never could get a decent shot due to being on the edge of a thicket and sure as hell didn't want to shoot and miss or maim him. Saw him 2-3 times over a few day period then decided one evening to post up a couple houndred yards to the right of the stand. Big boy came out 20 yards from the lock on and was moving fairly fast. Thought I had a clean shot just over 100 yards and shot straight into a 4" sapling that I didn't see as I was following him. The tree was a good 15-20 yards infront of him and missed completely.
Never saw him again and I assume that someone on the lease next to us got him. It was my first miss and a tough one to swallow.

All the time.
I didn't hunt in a stand I wanted to hunt in Monday morning because I decided not to put the boat in the water. Another guy went in the same area and shot a buck chasing a doe. I saw a yearling and a button buck.

To turn this around, Monday me and one of my brothers were on our way up at 12 and planned on going out at 2 or so. We saw a big 8 pt in the middle of the road running so we decided to go out as soon as we got there.
My dad and other brother were already there and out for a midday hunt. I wanted to hunt a certain stand way across the property originally, but only one of our 4 wheelers can make the climbs to get there, and my brother already was in the woods with it. So I was gonna go somewhere else, and just before I was gonna leave he pulled up on the 4 wheeler because he had to shite and wanted to change spots. So I took that bike and went where I originally wanted to go, got in the stand at 1:15, saw a doe with a buck chasing at 1:30 but couldn't get a shot, and shot a 9 pt following the doe trail at 2.
First time strategy has ever paid off for me deer hunting

It is extremely frustrating when you second guess yourself and end up making the wrong choice. It is even more satisfying when you make a choice and it works as planned. I guess if we ever lose that passion is when it`s not fun anymore
