Nah we got some pretty good chances next week.

October is always dry. This isn’t an anomaly. That’s why my grandad would only plant rye grass. The deer eat it when it’s sprouting, it’s cheap, and it can grow on the surface of the sun.

It aint cheap anymore ~$35/bag, more expensive than just about everything in my mix (wheat oats, elbon rye, peas, ) and all have much better nutrition and are not as aggressive

Chances and total amounts dropped significantly overnight. I ordered Elbon Rye just in case and plan on storing (praying it will keep) my blends till next season.

I hate October.

It takes less rye grass to the acre than wheat, oats, or elbon.

Rye grass will be $6 less an acre to plant based on the prices I paid for seed.

I only do about 10% in my mix to be a filler

I hate October.... and 15-day forecasts! I was planning to plant this weekend but now I'm back in "wait and see" mode.

whatever works for you, i use wheat as a filler ($9/50 lb and suggested seed rate of 90lb/acre) vs annual gulf rye at $35/40 lb and suggested rate of 40lb/acre

but as the biologist advised me when I asked what to plant "if you are planting it, it is growing and they are eating it, keep on doing it, "
he siad any further than that we are just splitting hairs

Pulverize the plot. If you see any dark dirt, wait. If dry as hell you good to go. Broadcast and drag well with harrow or roll it several times. Bury it.

I did this 3 weeks ago, I will lose about 25-30% to spots that had moisture and germinated. Oh well. Still plenty of bare dirt. Will toss out some wheat on top of the ground when I see the rain clouds without a doubt.

If you haven't planted I would go this weekend and cover for sure.

Calling for a 50% chance of rain on 10/31 near Pattison, MS. Let’s hope that forecast holds. If it holds, I’m Planning on drilling 8 acres in Legacy Blend from Hunt Stratton on 10/30.

I’m about 7 miles SE of Pattison on HWY 547. I’ve never stopped in Pattison. I go to Port Gibson if I need anything.

Hot and dry, too!

We planted with some residual hurricane moisture late Sept. Got a good stand but they haven't done much since. I'm planning to put fertilizer out Wed with fingers crossed on the rain
