I had a water oak removed a couple of months ago. The stump is about 3 feet in diameter.

Tree service stopped by today, as they're "in the neighborhood." Said normal price is $100 per foot, so $300.
But will do it for $200. Sounds reasonable to me.

How far down should they grind it? Sound reasonable to you?

Yes, renting a stump grinder for that size stump would be around $260 for a day anyway

$200 for a single stump isn’t bad. They can go cheaper if there are several. Get them to grind it well below the surface. Any wood left in the ground will eventually rot and settle into a small sinkhole.

Most guys aren't dragging a machine to a residence for a one time $100 project.

Dont forget about the mound of sawdust you will be left with. You may want them to quote that and dirt fill also.

Yeah but they are already in the neighborhood so it’s bonus work. $200 is fair OP but not an amazing quote. You likely won’t beat it though.

I had about 25 stumps ground last year for $500. Mostly pines from 18” to 2’ in diameter. The guy that did the work had a large remote controlled unit. This was in Shreveport.

Yep, those shavings are no joke. They get woven together and it’s nearly impossible to move them with a shovel. You need a hay fork or something similar.
