Sitting on a rye grass plot with my 10 yr old step son. I told him my .280 kicked just like his 243. About 7:20 a doe came out and she was watching the woods across from her. We got situated with him squating in a chair and the rifle up just in case.
She fed for a minute and went in across the plot in the same direction she was looking. Watching the wood line I saw a rack buck step out. He strutted into the plot and I got the rifle up and ready for him. While doing this the doe stepped back out and the buck started trailing her around. Seemed like it took forever and he was having a hard time staying on the buck. Every time I'd stop the deer he'd have to readjust and by then they would be back on the move. Finally it all lines up at about 100 yards and with a Rem 700 .280 he let the lead fly. I knew the buck was hit and when he was running he had that run that looks like he is taking too many steps for the distance he's covering and I watched him crash in the woods. I haven't been that excited in a looong time.
He's killed 2 does and a big sow but this is his first buck. So proud of how well he did.

Spillman. He told me that now all he needs is a turkey, rabbit, and duck to complete his list.

This is like that other thread but opposite, you're the step dad.

He can get over it in the same pants he got mad in. It ain't about him or me. It's about how happy the boy is.

Pretty good shot placement for being as nervous as he was
