That's terrible. A 23 year old dead and a 22 year old has to live with the fact that he shot his friend.

Horrible for all involved

Terrible and tragic. I know he will have to live with this and maybe this isn’t the right time to preach. We all make mistakes. But wear your damn hunter orange folks!

Make sure of your target and beyond what you are shooting at. Horrible. Im sure he feels terrible. Tragic. Easy for me to say now but once trigger is pulled theres no taking back the shot

Such stupidity.

I wonder if there even was a hog or if the guy was just shooting at a moving bush. I would put my money on moving bush.

Honey Island/Pearl River WMA has lots of cypress sloughs and cuts that are 6-10 feet lower than the trail. Possible that the guy was in one of those cuts and climbing up the embankment to get back on the trail and his friend shot at rustling bushes while his buddy was climbing up right there.

I hate that he was charged for negligent homicide. Probably fits by definition of the law but to me it’s just a tragic accident and society benefits none by charging him.

The benefit is actually pretty clear: an extraordinarily negligent hunter won’t be in the woods with you for a few years after he already killed someone.

What I partly have issue w is the deceased bears no legal responsibility in this aside from being deceased

Responsibility lies with the one who pulled the trigger

Sure he does. If his family elects to sue, Louisiana is a pure comparative fault state. That means the fault of the deceased will be considered along with the fault of the shooter. It’s especially apt when the charge is negligent, not intentional homicide.

I imagine a jury would put a good bit of fault on a the victim who was also not following best practices and the law.

LDWF advised everyone to wear hunter orange, but orange is only required on WMA’s during firearm season for deer and special dog seasons for small game/hogs. Its neither of those seasons on Pearl River WMA so victim wasn’t violating the law in that regard

Friend might have been sitting in a makeshift blind. Even then there's no excuse.

As was posted earlier: Rule #4 - Always be sure of your target and what's beyond it.

Two lives(and two families' lives) ruined.
