I have been told that the public can launch at St. James Boat Club, because there is a public launch there. Is this true?

Was a couple years ago. Don’t remember if there was a fee.

Yep it’s public
The building is a parish event center

I just launched there last week. I did not pay, not sure if you're supposed to but i did not see any obvious signs.
Also, if you're going there to fish....dont waste your time

In terms of fish.....blind river has no fish

Parish owned. Actually two launches there. No charge.
You can take the Blind River all the way up to the Diversion Canal.
Turn left to go to the local bar/restaurant spots.
Turn right to go out to Lake Maurepas.
When you enter Lake Maurepas, follow the left shoreline, and you'll reach the "sandbar" in about a mile.
In the Summer, it's a great place to stop the boat and go swimming since it's only about 2 or 3 feet deep.

What about ducks and deer?

The fishing generally sucks but now till march is the time you may actually catch a few. I know some old timers that pull limits from it, but that’s the only water they’ve fished their entire life.

Is that the one off Airline? Do they still have deer in that pen?

It is free to launch there...thanks to all the hard work of a dedicated bunch of area residents who led the way to this gem on the East bank of St. James Parish.
The St. James Boat Club was started by Deroches mostly and several others who ran a yearly Choupique Rodeo to eventually fund the present location. Rodeos were held at Lutcher High School, the old boat launch at the mouth of Airline Canal near the old Sycamore Inn, and at the present day location. A name that comes to mind when I think of the boat club is Spider Calcagno. A truly hard worker/member who gave lots of his time to the cause as did Curtis Deroche. Can't rember all the members but thanks to them.

Is there a reason why Blind River is a poor fishery? It looks very fishy.

storm messed it up few years back...
I've been there and worn out the bass...
bream, chinquapin an sac-au-lait (crappie) can be absolutely caught...
great place to take young ones...
people fish and picnic at the landing area...
Part of the Maurapas Swamp WMA...
Deer hunting is ok...used to be awesome duck hunting back in the day but not anymore...Duck Commander guys made some of their earliest videos out there before it turned...

It is affected by storm surge. Hurricanes and even tropical storms push lots of water in and results in fish kills. A couple years without storm surges and the area recovers some and becomes ok fishing, but not great. Then eventually another storm pushes water in and the cycle repeats.

Another issue is the swamp is slowly dying. The leeves of the Mississippi River are the culprit, but a fresh water diversion is in planning that will hopefully help.
I noticed a noticeable uptick in numbers and quality of fish in the years following the 2016 flood.

Diversions probably would help a lot. They’ve been talking about building them for over 20 years for the swamp. I’ll believe it when I actually see it.
Just 20 more years of studying to go.
