I read somewhere that a good way to spruce up dull decoys for the season is to wipe them down with Armor All. It helps make the colors stand out and look glossy.

As a spin off from that, what do y'all think about spraying them down with a tire shine product to reach the same effect? Has anyone tried this?

Waste of time. I'd just clean the dirt of with water. I've used one of those mr clean magic sponge things before and it helped get some that old dirt off

Water will rinse tire shine right off.

Do it. Anything that takes that little effort and gives you the feeling that you're doing something that will get you closer to ducks is worth doing.

They have a degree of irridesence to them that flat paint doesn't replicate. And their feathers have some shine to them. Its more about visibility than anything.

Wouldn't that put a sheen on the water?

I'd used Krylon 1311 clear coat and you should be able to find it at Walmart. Krylon has also come out with one that is even flatter. You have to be careful with the 1311 because if you put it on too heavy it will shine. Put several really light coats on and you should be fine

Hijack: what's the best way to touch them up when paint is chipped? I've used sharpies but it doesn't quite match

Possibly. I guess this is part of the reason I am asking. Don't want to do something that would definitely hinder my chances at duck destruction

I would just make sure they are clean, and find some model paint and touch up the color on the wings and head.

Cabelas and MPW sell decoy touch-up kits but I am sure you could run to Hobby Lobby and find some similar paint for cheaper since it won't be labeled "Decoy Paint Touch-Up Kit"

As soon as it becomes associated with duck hunting, the price skyrockets.

Plus, you are thinking about this in human eyes. Ducks don't see the same as us. Look up the Flambeau UV paint to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

What looks better to you may glare and look worse to them. I kinda prefer dull decoys because the silhouette shows more than detail, thus making them come closer for a discerning look. If they see bright fake green heads from a distance they may shy away.

I cant see why you would use an oil based product at all. If anything add a little dawn to your water and scrub clean.

I bought a touch up kit for mallards, d/h, and pintails, d/h from somewhere years ago. Still have it and the directions on where and what colors to paint the head, wings etc. Kinda like painting by numbers. Anyway every year after the season is over I clean my decoys for storing and I keep the ones that need touch up and do a assembly line painting detail. The grandkids love it. Paint the heads and beak and let dry. Then the wings and so on. Usually around 2-3 dozen or so. Most just need a little, a few need alot.

The first time I saw a wad of ducks come into some old 2 liter Coke bottles painted black on Black Bayou, I figured decoys being super realistic and having paint chipping really didn't matter a whole lot.
