I see a lot of Buffleheads or Buffles.

To answer your original question I call them greys.

Always heard them called gray ducks in the Mobile Delta. Most common "big duck" over there.

They must migrate at night. Several times I've gone to bed at my camper in October with zero coots on the lake only to wake up the next morning to see a couple of hundred.

Especially on opening weekend. There's a couple hundred extra motivational reasons for them to fly the frick out as fast as possible instead of casually swimming away.

eta: maisweh, what time y'all headin out? May have to have a lil' OB and meet and greet.

No shite... HUH.. It's a joke... They do fly, but they don't come close to the flight of ducks... Ever see those frickers land, not the most graceful bird...

Why do people on this site take shite so literally...?

They migrate by land, have you never seen a mass land migration while bow hunting?

My go-to name for them. I like watching them from the deerstand about as well as I enjoy shooting and eating them.

Yep, having them fly by your feet as you're hanging in a tree so they can land in the puddles on the road is pretty cool.

the only camp I can think of on that side of the canal is toward the end, right before it splits off. unless its before that?

I've only called them grey ducks -- hunted all over the SE though but primarily in SE Missouri and NW Tennessee

Other nick names I've always used: spoonies, blackjacks (or just jacks), bluebills
