I don't have much experience surf fishing for specks. When using popping corks, how long should I make my leader? I'll more than likely be using Gulp shrimp.

Also, is it best to wade out as far as possible or is there a certain depth the fish tend to run in?

TIA

Waist deep ...1-3 feet ..just have to try different depths.
I like mine at 2 feet.

Probably a foot and half of leader from cork to hook.

Throw in between the bar and shore and behind the bar. Also if there are any breaks in the beach from a bayou throw in the middle of those.

I usually make my leader the length of my arm, just easy to measure

I like to get out there at sunrise and begin casting right when I get to the edge of the water. Make a couple casts and if you don't catch anything, take a couple steps and repeat.

Best chance of catching is when you can see a little. Sometimes the bite is over after a few hours so always be there early.

18 inch leader for surf fishing

As you wade out you'll notice a drop off which usually only goes a little over waist deep. Walk through the drop off up onto the first sand bar. If you were to continue walking you'd hit another drop off or trough. No need to go that far. The seoond one will also be deeper.

Once you get to the first sand bar you'll be able to walk parallel with the shoreline and cast back towards the shore(into the fist drop off) and also cast out to the gulf side. Sometimes there up close and sometimes there out a little further.

Just keep walking and casting till you find em.

Also I'd suggest in addition to the popping cork bringing a mirrolure mirrodine for surf fishing. It's a very good surf bait.

Also make sure you use a float basket and not a stringer. Unless you like trolling for sharks.

Talk about shark central! Im not sure I'm ever wade fishing chandelier again...

OP,

Look for where you see nervous water, any slicks, and any signs of bait instead of indiscriminately fishing miles of available beach. Also like has been mentioned get your arse out of bed and be on the water early.

How is a basket that much better? It's still attached to you

Fish aren't marinating your leg with slime and I would imagine they are free swimming and not thrashing around like chum.

...or bleeding because of a salt rusted stringer being poked through their gills.

I like the floater as a life preserver.

Get a big dip net thats round. A good laugh to see When someone is netting a 16 inch trout with a 10 inch wide net.

Gear ur bag up with fingernail clippers etc
