Shuffle your feet.

If I'm in the surf a sunup, I'm throwing top water. Once the sun gets up (unless it's cloudy), I'll switch to a Mirrodine or some other suspending hard bait.

But the biggest trout I ever caught in Fourchon was caught at about 3pm on a scolding August day...on a fly rod. That was like 1996 or so. I guess the river had been extremely low or something, and the water was more blue than green. It was actually so clear we were seeing the trout.

Like others mentioned, you can catch fish on either side of the first sand bar. But my first casts of the morning are when my feet are still dry. I go more during the week than weekends, and as long as there aren't a bunch of people fishing where you are, the trout will be right between the sandbar and the beach. As others stated, if you don't have luck there, THEN move out to the bar and cast the other side. Look for bait, birds, and subtle differences in the bottom. (Shells, mud instead of sand, etc...)

saw some guys chest deep out there the other day. silly bastards. i could see myself about mid calf deep if it got hot enough, but not much more

im not saying you're lying, but thats almost unbelievable. i tried that one time and had a had actually tied 2 stringers together when i saw a small shark take a chunk of a fish. it was probably all of 3 feet long but scared the piss out of me

I was fishing Fourchon a few years back and had one come up and bite the styrofoam ring, then hit the net below. It was bigger than 3 feet too. Scared the crap out of me, but I just moved down and kept on fishing. I recommend having a long leash on your floating net or stringer.

Hold your rod top down (if in a boat) . Kinda fast retrieve usually. Reel and jerk. It's a shallow running suspending bait. If you hold the rod tip too high during the retrieve you won't get enough depth.
