I've been seriously thinking about getting a Hobie Outback. I want something I can fish, hunt, and just paddle around in. Any body have one or something similar or any thoughts in general? FYI, I'm new to kayaks.

Outback and Revolution are two good Hobie's if you want a pedaling yak.

is the pedaling worth the premium? When I went and tested a couple out, it seemed like a real good way to keep your hands free to fish or whatever.

Just remember that I'd your peddling you can't go in super shallow water to chase reds. Them fins stick down far.

I've never tried it. I think it's cool that you can change direction while reeling in and that you don't have to stop in the middle of your cast and paddle. Personally, I only want to kayak fish if I can stand up. I think you can stand in some hobies but I'm not sure which ones. If you could pedal while sitting and stand to fish it seems like a cool idea. Some of the other posters can probably give you more info on the Hobies. I'm assuming they're good though because they have a cult-like following. The pro angler seems amazing for features but it's $2500 and 88 lb.'s

Yea they can't go much shallower than my boat, and cost just as much. No reason for me to get one.

I have a friend that has a Hobie with the pedals and he doesn't use it much because it is hard to maneuver and he can't get into the shallow ponds.

The pedals/fins come out with ease so you can just use a paddle like normal when expecting shallow water but can have the choice of pedals for any water more than a couple feet deep. I think that's pretty cool. I wouldn't get a hobie anyway (just preference) but they certainly have cool advantages.

I'm just gonna get me an ascend to use on occasion and for quick morning trips when I move and don't have the time to go get the boat.

Damn Coon, sorry for the insult. My perception is skewed by all the kayak tournament fishing I used to do, where distance and speed are extremely important. Nothing wrong with a wide boat for close fishing in the marsh. In fact, half the time i go i stick within a mile of the launch, so the Diablo would be perfect. My dad quit fishing those tournaments with me b/c he hated the ridiculous competitiveness, and I haven't fished one in a year or so.

I'm just busting your balls, mung. I know that's not what you meant. I don't fish in tournaments because I know I can't compete with guys fishing that style (covering 10+ miles for that one fish). But again, that's not what I bought mine for. To each his own.
