I wear ankle socks, dress socks, tube socks. Don't really notice a difference.

I wear ankle socks with mine . Rubs the hair off my leg but my socks dont wad up in the bottom either

Can't help you up top but Costco has their own brand (Kirkland I think) that is pretty f-ing awesome in the foot area for boots.

Justin makes an over the calf boot sock that works really well, I dont havve a problem with them falling down.
