It got hairy towards the end as it seems every weekend things kept popping up. I finally had a good day to watch the field for a couple of hours. We have some meat in the freezer and new ideas for cooking it.

Saw fewer bucks and only one mature buck all year. My 8 year old killed his first doe, my 10 year old killed an 8 point his first racked deer, and I shot a doe.

Saw deer on all but one hunt this year.

Decent year for the weather we had. Shot a handful of decent bucks both on our high fence and low fence property. Mostly let friends/family do the shooting this year.

Management bucks

Low fence bucks

Only buck I killed this year

Now its time to get after the varmints

Yea I didn't and wouldn't put anything I killed in Texas on here. Kinda not the same as a typical deer season. More of a meat haul. Not much sport in it anymore out there. We went Christmas break and brought home 12 with 5 of them being solid bucks like yours. 2 shot from the window of a truck. All low fence and over populated like everything else out there. And enough AXIS everywhere now they are worse than hogs.

I left out the best part about my hunting season.

I had one or two or all three of my kids in the woods or on the water nearly every weekend, and lots of evenings in between.

We drank coffee and chocolate and ate snacks, told funny stories, and made lots of memories.

In a few years when they are out of the house, it won't be the size of the bucks I'll remember, it'll be the time in the woods and at the camp that we'll talk about. Sure we'll remember that we killed something, but that'll only serve as the excuse to do the rest.

Killed a nice buck with my bow. If you are a member of QDMA, there will be a story in their magazine coming out soon.

Was the only deer I killed this past season.

fairly slow season but got a few good ones. 2 does with bow and with rifle 15" 8 point, 16" 6 point that should have been an 8 but no brows at all, and a really nice 17" heavy 9 point. Only saw 2 other legal bucks all season and just a handful of small bucks. Several does but buck sightings were below average for sure.

Yep. My son's been hunting with me since he was 5 or so. He's ate up with it just like me, we hunt almost every weekend during the season. He'll be 16 this summer so it won't be long he'll be out of the house and probably hunting with college friends. I just hope he makes time to hunt with his old man.

In some ways a really slow season but a good one. Watched a ton of good 3.5 and 4.5 year old bucks. Only had one 5.5 on the farm this year with any regularity and decided to wait on him. Finally convinced the landower to spend some time in the stand this year. He had never killed anything over a small hill 6. What do you know he managed to connect with him during the 2 day gun hunt. Live weight was 203. Would have scored much better last year but still a great first good buck.

Little smoke decided this is the year to be interested in hunting. It went from me constantly asking if he wanted to come with me last year to him begging me to take him every chance we got to sneak out. Youth season let him tag his second, a little button.

He had a chance at the 5.5 year old but couldn't quite get the crossbow moved fast enough and decided not to take a marginal shot. He also tangled with this little guy a half dozen times but he never would take the last step needed. Watching him from a climbing stand 40 yards away was the highlight of my hunting career at that point. He is officially mad at this deer and is planning on going after him hard next year.

He did manage to connect on this guy on his last hunt of the season. It was his first antlered and first with a crossbow. He is already practicing with a compound hoping to get up to 45# next year so he can use it.

Only deer I killed this year was on a backpacking trip into a national forest in central arkansas. Averaged 10 miles a day from base camp. Managed to get a 5.5 year old 8pt that was smaller than our normal 2.5 year olds and a small doe.

Also managed to win a $4000 blind that is still sitting on a trailer waiting until it dries enough to get it out where it needs to be.

All in all a good season even if totally different then what I expected.

Me too. They will be ready to go next year even with a bad season this year and I am proud of that. Spending time together in the woods and duck blind is much more productive than other things they could be doing. Only have a few more years before they are in college.

Hope they stick with it and want to keep coming to the woods with their old man.
