I meant the yellow tail gave away that it was a juvenile. There isn't anything in the picture to reference

I've seen several juvenile copperheads that color. The juvenile cottonmouths I've seen are similar but medium brown and chocolate. I'm on my phone though so maybe the colors look off?

I have seen none like that, but do understand some in the east are darker. In La. they are generally very bright with lots of orange/copper. When in doubt, the dots on the head rule.

Most of the juveniles have been closer to the top picture and most of the older ones have been closer to the bottom.

Do copperheads hang around water a lot? If he killed this in Falgout canal I don't think it would be a copperhead.

The only thing I've ever seen that looks like the top one is a cottonmouth.
