We were eating at our local Mexican restaurant in the Kroger shopping center when my 7yr old daughter gots restless and wanted to take a walk.

We slowly strolled from one end of the shopping center to the other then turned around. That's when she excitedly says, "Dad, there's a snake." And sure enough, there's a snake in front of the drycleaners.

So, I had to show off to her and caught it.

Of course, I identified it to be a nonvenomous black rat snake before proceeding.

We walked back to the Mexican restaurant to show it to our party but, they weren't as impressed. Some people were even scared.

After a couple of pictures and letting a couple random kids touch it, we took it back behind the shopping center and let it go.

Don't kill nonvenomous snakes.

Nope, "black ratsnake" aka eastern ratsnake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis) is correct.

My wife would leave and never eat there again.

Don't think I could ever catch a black racer (snake). Those damn things are fast as hell and bolt as soon as you spook them.

I've witnessed plenty of racers that were able to support themselves at least that high WITHOUT climbing on anything. Had one last summer come out from behind a shrub as I was weed-eating and his head was well over 2 feet off the ground before he took off.

Racers are good climbers too. We caught and released one at Fontainebleau park, and it went straight up a small tree and climbed through the canopy about 20’ above ground.

Just don’t spook them . I catch them all the time, and you’d be surprised how many you can sneak up on and grab while they just sit there. Once they decide to bolt though, they are extremely hard to catch.
