I typically not one to kill a snake. But this one was up by my back door. Too close for comfort.

What kind is it?

Maybe a Broad Banded Watersnake, but a closer shot of the head would be helpful.

I'm probably not the best one to reply, especially after all these delicious vodka drinks. But, I'm going to guess a juvenile broad banded water snake.

What parish?

It’s a watersnake but not a broad banded watersnake.

A very young Plain-bellied watersnake

I am going with a Midland water snake Nerodia sipedon pleuralis

Midland (northern) is my other thought. That’s why I asked what parish.

Definitely not a broad banded

I mostly stay out of these as I really only see two of the Nerodia species in my area in any real numbers. BTW, the broad bandeds and ribbons were out in force this weekend. A ribbon from our gold fish pond chased a young bronze frog across our back porch.

I could almost go Midland on this one if the location is right, but plenty broad-bandeds have a pattern in the anterior part of the body that is very Midlandish. I went broad-banded because of the whitish color bordering all of the dark bands, which pretty much every broad-banded has. Though I’ve only seen a couple Midlands in person and never a juvie.

Broad bandeds are one that do not change much from baby/juvi/adult. Never seen one look anything like the one pictured. Ours all look like:

We get a lot of variety in Southeast La. with broad-bandeds…

All but that last one are even at the same location on the same day.

ETA: Here’s one that I thought looks a little Midlandish in the front…

Harmless plain-bellied watersnake - Nerodia erythrogaster. They lose the patterns as they age.

I would still need a better shot of the head to say for sure. It sure is arrowhead shaped. I have seen plenty of cottonmouths with a noticeable band pattern.

We know it's not a cottonmouth.
