Anyone have one? Experience firing 200/220 grain? Any issues?

Thinking about getting one. I've been going back and forth for months on which 10mm to buy. The only three I'm considering are the Glock 20 gen 4, Springfield Xdm Elite, and the Smith and Wesson.

No experience with it…but the rebate program ($100 for 2.0) ends April 2.

I’ve been kind of ignoring the rebates because I really don’t need another S&W….but it’s making it hard.

Have a m&p sport, shield, and the original m&p22 full sized pistol that Walther made for them. Love them all, I also want to add a compact 2.0 9mm.

I love my Glock 20. Haven’t shot any other 10mm. I’m sure they’re all good. If I was a cop and had the choice, I’d carry the Glock 20.

I have it. It is lightweight and I bought it specifically for carrying while sheep hunting and hiking here in Alaska.

It is fine all around. I do not like the really aggressive texturing on the grips, it will rub through clothing or skin on hikes but I realize most people probably aren’t carrying it on extended hikes/hunts.

10mm is easy to get up here and not too expensive. I shoot Buffalo bore 220 grain heavy outdoorsman and it is not as brutally snappy as I anticipated, but it also isn’t a joy to shoot like a 9mm. It is a good solid piece and I would recommend it.

With that said, I really would not want to use it on a brownie under any circumstances, but it’s better than nothing. No hesitation for using on two legged predators.

If you don't mind, could you give me a little more reasoning? Thanks, baw.

An average brown bear is going to weigh, conservatively, about 600-700 pounds, some are way above that. It is a truly humbling experience to be close to one of these bears in the wild. There isn’t a single handgun that I would consider “adequate” for stopping a grizzly. But any gun is better than no gun and there are plenty of trade offs to analyze. A 10mm is a good balance but I won’t for a second kid myself that it’s adequate, if that makes sense.

For humans it is a great cartridge and great pistol, just a bit different when you are talking big bears.

Understood, baw. Thanks for your thoughts. I wasn't sure if that was where you were going or if you were saying you'd pick another 10mm if you think you might need it for a larger animal. I completely understand your point, though.

Well, on the plus side, if you don't like it, you can sell it for whatever you paid for it in all likelihood, so just pull the trigger, har har.

On a serious note, why just not .45ACP 230grain? Perfectly smooth out of barrels that are more than an inch shorter (with one glaring exception in a Taurus.) Ammo diversity in firearms is not an advantage.

Correct! It's been a long time since anyone has asked me if that was a phone number.

The only reason I want a 10mm is for when I'm hiking in the mountains. The 45ACP is said to be a poor choice for protection against a bear. I'd like a 10mm that can handle 200 grain or better and provides 15 or more rounds. I've been looking into the 3 handguns I previously mentioned for months. I know the Glock 20 is probably the best overall choice, but damn if that grip is much bigger than the others. I can definitely get my hand around it and control it, but in the heat of the moment.....maybe a better/easier grip will be beneficial?

Because 10mm is better!

I’m a Glock fan, but the 10mm offering in anything but the SF is just too big for my baby hands. I really like the M&P grip, but I put a little tape around it to cut down that really aggressive stippling.

Also, here is a pretty good video that shows bears and handguns as a last resort. If nothing else it’s a good way to burn off 45 minutes at work on a Friday!

Years ago after the DirtyHarry/ Magnum Force movies came out some Drs. where I worked planned a trip to Alaska. They all bought S&W .44 magnums and were talking a bunch of shite about their “hand cannons”.

I told one of them if all they had was a 44 mag and a bear came after them best thing to do would be to shoot themselves.

They got pissed.

Yeah, I'm thinking I would need 3 somewhat well placed shots on a bear to even make him slow down. I'm fairly certain a 44 mag revolver will give me one. The others will miss. I will die.

....I might die anyway, but I'd like a chance to survive!

My brother and I other have Glock 20s and enjoy them.

I'm very, very close to getting a Sig P220 Legion 10mm. I just need to buy it so my wife doesn't notice.
