When was younger and fished small creeks I would catch odd fish from time to time. I've caught several different looking bass but don't have a clue what they were. And yes I have caught red eyes before too.

I apologize. Apparently they were recently split into 5 distinct species.
No need to apologize. We're just BSing and visiting on a message board.

You sure they weren't just spotted bass that have red eyes? Actual redeye bass are usually much more darkly colored than spots.
Yessir, I am sure. We have caught both from the same river. Of course, there is going to be some overlap in natural habitat. Fish aren't smart enough to know where the state line is. That's why they're still in schools. :rimshot:

We used to catch the real redeye bass in a small creek where I grew up. We'd camp, fish, and swim down there when we were kids. A 1/2 pounder was a monster for that little creek.

LA also has grass pickerel(sometimes called a redfin pickerel) but they are almost indistinguishable from chain pickerel. I am not sure if the two can interbreed like sauger and walleye.

Well I catch one line the top picture out of a bar pit off the Mississippi River, Sacalait fishing years ago. I fished then year round, high water or low.

Do them pickerel fish eat worth a shite? Never caught one of the louisiana type.
Think I may make it a goal and starting from scratch see how long it takes to catch one of every freshwater species from La

The meat is very white and flaky, but has a ton of little bones in it.
