Transmission went out in my '10 pickup, and I got a call from the mechanic that a complete rebuild would be $3,700. Could get a reman from Chevy put in for $4,500. He did say his rebuild would use a better torque converter. I have no knowledge of any of this. Am I getting screwed?

I just put a gm reman in and it was $2800 labor and tax included. 3 year warranty. When a shop rebuilds a transmission they replace the parts that are bad. A GM remanufactured transmission has all new parts. The truck I put this in was a 2002 model though. Think they are the same transmission.

Depends on transmission shop. There are some shops that are excellent and that can build them stronger than new. But that doesn't mean this one can. The advantage of the GM one is warranty, which should be 3 yrs or 100,000. Ask about warranties including parts, labor and fluids.

I used 2010 Chevy 1500 with 5.3 for these links. Also looks like he is charging you almost 2k labor to replace transmission. Is it a 4WD? That's still high.

When the tranny in my dodge went out I bought a reman from this company. No complaints, I believe I paid $1,800.

It is a 4WD. I'll ask him about the warranty on the rebuild, but I've asked around here at the office and others have paid around the same.

Thanks

I think so, transmission guy here would do that one for less than $2K. 2005 suburban was $1800

That's a shitty warranty; who puts 33K miles on a truck in a year?

I had to replace mine in my '08 Silverado at 83k miles.
I went with jasper transmission which is a used shell but all new internals. It was 200 dollars more than a rebuild but the warranty was 3 years 100k miles VS 1 year 24k miles.
I'm at 15k miles on it now and it's been fine.

ETA:mine is 2WD and it was 2500 cash.

Mine was also 4x4. $1200 for the rebuild or $2600 for the GM reman. This was just about a month ago and here is the price breakdown. You need to find a new transmission shop.

IMO you're an exception; most are under 20K easily

Way older but my '96 2Dr 4x4 Tahoe was less than 2k for a rebuild or 3K for a reman installed.

I got a new transmission in my '10 Silverado for $2200 last yr with a 1 yr warranty. Recommendation I got was to go specifically to a transmission shop and not just a general mechanic.

Guess I'm screwed. This estimate is from a Transmission shop here in Ellic, and the truck is on the rack this morning. Just got back from talking with the owner, I'm getting a 2 yr warranty on the rebuild.

i just had my '99 sierra rebuilt. the guy put a corvette servo in it though. it ran me about $1300, but this was a shade tree mechanic. there's no hard shifts while it runs around town, but if i get on the highway and have to stop and start, it shifts like it's going to fall out of the truck. apparently this is a good thing. the harder it shifts, the long it lasts and reduces the chance of slippage.

Its usually $500-800 for most vehicles to remove it and then the same to put one back in. So let's say $1200 labor. Then they have to break it open and depending on the work needed, go from there. I've had a throwout bearing be the only thing bad in an old Nissan manual truck and they replaced it for $250 in labor I think, and I did removed it and put the transmission back in. Its a PITA.

But I don't know what a reman transmission runs? It would be a good estimate to say $1000-1200 for labor plus the cost of a reman.

On a side note it is a good idea to have the rear main seal changed on your crankshaft while the transmission is out.

First off I would say it's not different transmission than the original and not a new one. And it's no a "GM" Reman unit either. How do I know? This guy didn't sell you a trans below his cost.

Second, you got charged for 6 quarts of fluid. That tells me he: 1) probably put the old torque converter with the old fluid back in your truck! 2) He didn't flush out your radiator, cooler and cooler lines. Theses will have probably been contaminated, not only with bad fluid but with metal and clutch material from the old transmission.

Sounds like you may have trouble in the future.

It is a direct from GM reman that can be factory warranty services at any GM dealer in the country.

Sounds like you need a new supplier.

About 10 years ago had a transmission rebuilt for $1800. 2 weeks later it went out and took back to transmission shop, they were shutdown and after weeks or maybe months of trying to get ahold of owners were told they filed bankruptcy. I was out $1800 and still had no transmission

ETA: tow truck driver had recommended this place and I was new to town
