I have a 2008 Silverado 5.3L engine that is losing oil. It doesn't smoke or leak, but it will use a quart of oil in about 3-4 weeks after changing. Any ideas why or how to fix?

There is a know problem in the active fuel management system (AFM) causing this. Mine had started doing the same as yours, but after the 100,000 mile service it has stopped, not sure why.

Keep an eye on your level and add as necessary. I'm told you can deleted the AFM function, but I cannot because it throws an "environmental code" when you go for an inspection sticker. My hook-up for inspections stickers had to close shop.

You might have a collapsed lifter. I had the same thing on my truck and it consumed oil like a fat kid at a buffet. Only way to fix it is to get the lifters replaced.

My 05 has 181,000 miles and burns oil. It's the lifters but I'm not going to spend the money to fix it. I will drive it until it dies because I have a 2016 that barely gets used. I only have it for nostalgia anyway. I've had that truck for 13 years and it's on its 6th state and 3rd wife in that time.

Agreed with other posters saying it's the AFM system, also sometimes called DOD or displacement on demand.

I'll copy and paste a bookmarked post I made about it a while back:

Got my 6.2L in my Yukon tuned by Engine Power Systems, who is the former owner of Thunder Racing. Got a DOD delete along with a light engine tune and a transmission tune. Better throttle response, shifts faster, and best of all, doesn't go into V4 mode.

Op why don't you like the deactivation? Just curious.

The displacement-on-demand system is the Achilles heel of an otherwise reliable and bulletproof motor. It adds an unnecessary layer of complexity and all but guarantees you will drop a lifter around 100k miles.

To the left is a standard lifter and to the right is a DOD lifter. That spring is compressed every time the vehicle goes into V4 mode. Over time that spring gets weak and eventually breaks. Then the heads must come off to fix the issue which is $$$.

To the OP, you can also do a full DOD delete if you're brave enough. Texas Speed has everything you need to do the delete (you can even change the cam if you wanted). Know that this is different from turning it off electronically - you're actually replacing the points of failure and guaranteeing much more life for your motor.

I had this same issue when my 08 got to about 90K miles. After doing an oil consumption test at the dealership, they installed some sort of deflector but it didn't really help. I finally got rid of my truck back in February but it was still burning about 1/4-1/2 quart of oil every 1000 miles. It had 172K miles on it when I traded her in.

I had lifter problems and lost a cylinder due to the AFM. I rebuilt the whole top end because I love my Chevy.

Do yourself a favor and do these 2 things.

1. When changing oil, substitute 1 quart of oil with Lucas oil treatment.

2. Purchase the Range Technilogies AFM disable device and don't look back. You'll lose about 1.5 mpg by being in V8 100% of the time but who cares. Will give off no codes.

I have a 2007 Tahoe and it used to burn oil like a sombitch. I would have to add a quart every 1000 miles or so. My last 2-3 oil changes I added RiSlone Ring Seal Smoke Repair with the new oil, and I havent had to add any in between oil changes since. Disclaimer: I know next to nothing about cars.

Buying that AFM disable device is all I need to do to not have to worry about the lifter problem? I thought a lot more had to be done that got pretty expensive. I'd gladly pay 200 to not have to worry about losing a cylinder.
And buying the device will fix the lifter problem? No need to worry anymore? It really sucks driving my truck just waiting for it to happen and cost me thousands. I know of several people it's happened to.

It's the difference between doing an AFM disable electronically versus mechanically.

Electronically - your engine will still have the plumbing and lifters for the AFM system but they will not wear as much since it won't be activating 4 cylinder mode, so the failure rate on those lifters will decrease

Mechanically - you are physically removing everything from the AFM system, so you decrease the chances of failure to nearly zero

Mine is turned off electronically and I haven't had any issues dropping a lifter in 1.5 years. Hopefully it stays that way and I won't need to do a full mechanical delete.
