quote:And other breeds. I don't think this means what you think it means.
The fact is, the dilution gene found in Labradors now, is the exact same gene that gives us the coat dilution in Weimaraners.
At least 40 breeds carry the dilution gene.
Other places say the Weimaraner thing has been disproved.

this thread turned out exactly as expected

I know genetics pretty well and how it all works.
I've seen the documented spot mutations in genomes in animals. The Quarter horse stallion Impressive is a really interesting one where a gene mutated in him that gave rise to a whole new phenotype in muscling. It also led to a whole new genetic disease called HYPP. Curly Calf is another good one that can be traced back to one farm.
Just like in the 2 instances above, the color defect can be traced back. Could it have been a spot mutation with in those dogs? Maybe, but seems more likely that a kennel was looking to produce a novel type lab to be marketed.
Animal breeding is notoriously dishonest, whether that's blatant falsifying the parents or changing the birth date so that the animal has a size advantage.

Could it have been a spot mutation with in those dogs? Maybe,
BTW, it's not a color defect.

The kennel they were traced to also bred weimaraners, but for your arguments sake, yes they could have used any of the dilution gene breeds to breed it in.
Breeding in a color trait is very easy to do. Almost every breed of cow has a black coat now even though historically those colors are not present in their genomes.

And to the guy that says dogs are only bred for health and performance doesnt know do breading history, a lot were bred just for a look.
I think this was a response to me. ? I definitely did not say that so read again. And, you’re correct that a lot of dogs have been bred for looks and the outcomes haven’t been good. What are you trying to prove here?

What are you trying to prove here?

It was only matter of time before the OB became the OT. It was a good run.

I'm just happy I had my Silver (Retriever) these past 5 years. Saved my fat *** from having to pickup 3000+ birds.

No way. I thought they were all failures?

Better start saving up for a dog wheelchair, because his hips are gonna go at 6 years. This is what happens when you get a dog without papers

Nope, those Weimaraner genes took care of that years ago.
