Should't everyone be able to drive a manual transmission?

My son just turned 16 and I feel like have let him down. He can't drive a stick shift. I'll make it up and he will learn, but I learned when I was 12 in the soybean fields.

I talked to a buddy he said his manual transmission is a great theft deterrent.

I'm sure I know most of the OB can, but am I the only one who has let his son down?

Why? What are the advantages of driving a stick shift unless you own one. I haven't ridden in a vehicle with a Manuel transmission since high school (25 years) & that was only because it was someone old beater hand me down.

I always thought there was value in learning to drive with a manual. To each their own.

hate them Mexican transmissions!

I taught my oldest but sold my cj before my others were old enough to drive. I hope they never need that skill because they can barely chew gum and walk at the same time much less work 3 pedals and a shifter.

I can drive one (of course). My wife cannot. My nieces cannot. My girls are little, but I intend to teach them. Everyone should be able to. You never know when you'll have to jump into or steal a random car for a chase and its a stick. My wife doesn't get it, which drives me nuts.

If you ever go to Europe, most car's you rent are standard. I'm glad my father and mother taught me how to drive one.

Also, teach him on a motorcycle. When I was 12-13 I struggled with the stick, but once I learned on my uncle's bike, it clicked, and I was able to drive the car with no issues.

honestly, the only place I see this having an advantage is if one of my kids had to drive someone else's car for whatever reason or if the brakes went out in a car they were driving.

Yes everyone should know. Just in case you ever have to. I would be embarrassed if someone told me to go drive a certain vehicle and I had to tell them I couldn't because I cant drive a standard.

ETA: Its not too late to keep your son from being citified.

Yeah I think it's more fun to drive sports cars.

I also think it helps to be able to get in almost anything and drive it. I know it helped me when I have worked different jobs.

It doesn't hurt to learn. You never know when you'll need a random skill like that. When I learned it was like a small thing being crossed of the list to becoming a man.

I drove one years ago.

Now I'm not sure I still could. Been out of practice for so long.

They're also good during icy conditions.

Everybody should learn.

For example, there was a guy posting on the OT a few weeks ago. He had a chance to drive some kind of badass porche but couldnt, because he couldn't drive a stick. Sucks for that guy, and it carries over to other things.

Tractors, motorcycles, various other pieces of equipment, badass vehicles, etc
