Man this has been one amazing trip. Seeing axis, aoudad and sika everywhere.

Lots of pigs also. Just had another big hog show up but he ducked behind a bush. Must have winded me.

Never mind he just got smoked.

I’m going to wait to see if anymore come out.

He fell behind a tree so I hope it’s still there and didn’t run off. I hate tracking a pig through thick shite.

Shot this big bastard last time I was here but didn’t drop him.

Put one in his dome tonight.

I used to hunt between Harper and Junction. Not sure why, but we rarely had axis.
We did have a pot shite done of hogs.

Think the lack of water hurt us insofar as axis was concerned.

I lease some more property between Fredericksburg and Stonewall, and we are overrun with Axis. Also seen Sika deer last few years in Early October. They seem to disappear before I get a chance to stick one.

Nice! We have a ton of them but didn’t have any trophy bucks so we passed on all them in hopes of getting a few 8 pointers.

Saw a big axis herd on Friday driving through Stonewall. Between the winter a few years back and the trappers, I think the acid are more hit or miss now. If you have constant water, you hit.

How’d you get a lead on a lease in that area if you don’t mind me asking?

I have been bringing a buddy of mine( best friends since 5 years old) hunting on my ranch in South Texas for years and he got a lease in San Saba a few years ago with a few people we knew from grade school. He would invite me to hunt pigs there and help work which I did a couple times a year. I told him if I ever moved to Texas that I would join if they ever needed a new member. They ended up losing that lease and finding another one and asked me to join. Went and looked at it Feb of 2024 and joined in April of 2024.

One of the members saw it posted on Facebook and he was the 1st to respond. Once we saw it had over a mile of river on it we jumped on it.

I’ve made that mistake before

Not on an animal like this. I’ll never kill another free range axis that’s 38 inches in my life.

Sure.

To be honest, I’m in construction.
I made friends with a landowner when I was asking what he did with his land.
He told me a leased some
Out to some guys, but he wasn’t really pleased with them.

I just asked him for an opportunity if it ever presented itself.

He called me next day and said, if I was serious he would not renew lease with existing guys; and it was mine if I was serious..

I was. It’s been awesome.

No, about an hour west of Houston. But we’re in the hill country a lot for long weekends and an annual hunting trip in Mountain Home.

How will you have the axis processed?

I’ll have a chance for one soon.

I had as many steaks cut off it as they could, 10 pounds of medium hot breakfast sausage, and the rest ground meat with nothing added. Wanted to try the axis by itself and I have a ton of whitetail sausage from the last two years.

What part of Texas you hunt in? I have been hunting in the Rocksprings area for 27yrs and love it. Nothing like hunting in Texas.

Deer lease is in Junction and my ranch is in Brooks County Texas.

My brother also has a small ranch (105 acres) in Alice that I’m helping him fix up a small house on. He leases his land to a farmer and the farmer lets us dove hunt and hog hunt his place also so it’s several hundred acres combined and tons of hogs. Then I hunt my parents farm in Beaumont once of twice a year if something good shows up on camera.

This is why I left Baton Rouge and moved back to Texas. My arse got tired of driving 9hrs
