Ship Island

Thinking about taking the family and an exchange student to Ship Island. Is the South Side beach nice? I was there about 20 years ago and remember clear water and white sandy beaches, much nicer than the MS beaches at Biloxi and elsewhere. Is the south Ship Island beach still nice?

Short answer - yes. You can usually find your own secluded part of the beach as long as it's not a holiday weekend. Ship is nice for the family and you can also head further east to Horn but it's a little more of a party atmosphere on Horn. Biloxi beaches are currently closed due to the algae but last I checked the islands are safe for swimming.

if it was 20 years ago it might be barely more then a sand bar by now
go to google earth and check out the satellite imagery to see what to expect
look at it here: LINK

Lol you'd think so but no. The islands are still there and the Fort on Ship Island is still standing. Really cool to see and they'll give you a tour. A hurricane cut ship Island in half several years ago so there were east and west Ship Islands, but they recently filled it back in and now it's one island again.

By several years ago you mean Camille 50 years ago

Pro-tip: assume that the exchange student, if a female, hails from a country that has different ideas about modesty. You might want to have a brief discussion regarding attire.

Absolutely. It's about a mile and half to the Camille cut from the ferry dock. It's cool to look at from the ground if you feel like making the walk. It's a mile to the west end which can also be cool spot. With the spillway still open the water is not as pretty as usual. Got a pretty stiff westerly on Tuesday that should dirty it up but with any luck it will be better by the weekend.
If you are taking your own boat and have any questions I'll be happy to help you. Otherwise enjoy the ferry ride and don't forget to bring bug spray. The gnats and horse flies can be challenging.

Thanks. I appreciate it. We will take the ferry. We want just a day at the beach and don’t want a long drive to AL or FL

Yes, ship island is still a great place. As mentioned though, it's not a nice as usual this summer due to the influx from the spillway and rain. It's still a great spot to be, just won't be as clear as usual.
Don't bother. Camille cut was filled in early this year and is no more.

Will the algae bloom cause ship island to be extra crowded?

And bugs. Went to ship about 2 weeks ago, there was a swarm of bugs that were all over the area for a few days. Didn’t bite but just a nuisance. Seemed to calm down toward the end of our stay.
The sand on ship was insanely hot. It was black sand. Anything less than a sprint from your chair to the water and the sand was potential for second degree burn on your feet. Water wasn’t as clear as years past but still pretty clean up to 4’.

We went yesterday with my wife, kids, and sisters family. The south side of the beach was nice but still dirty from Barry. The water was not dirty but not super clear. We rented 2 chairs/umbrellas so we could visit while the kids played in the sand. It was a good day.

I am well aware the cut has been filled in, I've seen it with my own eyes dozens of times. It's pretty cool sight to see if you walk down there is look at what they have done with all the sand.
