How far west in Louisiana are black bears found?

Seen pics of one in the middle of town in Lafayette, so certainly west of there.

Bears will enter East Texas from Oklahoma. They won’t be the sacred Louisiana Black Bear, but they’ll be bears.

How far west in Louisiana are black bears found? Are they an animal that will expand their territory further west like towards Texas? I hunt on toledo bend on the Texas side and was just curious if we would ever see them there in the future.

2 were recently seen in western vermillion parish on acadia parish line

The biologist say the ones in St. Mary are whole different group than the ones in central and NLA - these seem to be the ones whose population is exploding so I guess they are the ones expanding their territory ?

Another guy I know is in a lease close to Montgomery. They’re overrun with wild hogs. They have a trap but can’t catch any because they have a resident bear that eats the bait in their hog trap.

What a nightmare, there are others ways to kill hogs but they might actually require a little effort. There are plenty of people who would gladly do it for free

yes, sometimes. The more they interact, the higher the odds are. hunting them lowers the odds.

Boudreaux gets 1 bear tag.

Boudreaux passes an arrow through the middle/guts of 15 bears which he does not recover.

Boudreaux finally fills his tag the last day of the season.

We need more boudreaux's. LOL

I don't get the absolute hatred of bears by some people. So you have to modify your life a little. I'm glad we are bringing something back that our ancestors almost destroyed. Just like we did with deer. I've got a good friend in Virginia and he kills monster deer every year on private and public property. They are completely covered with bear. It doesn't seem to bother them. He usually kills a big bear every year too. Of course, they don't put out 10 corn feeders all over their property.

You literally just made my point. Your buddy gets to hunt them. We do not.

The bear season is no different than our deer season years ago. I remember only 5 doe days, then 7, and many years later it turned into what there is now as the population grew.

I have seen the efforts that hunters put in to the conservation efforts to bring bear back to a huntable population. Yes I think we should have had a season a few years ago. And I think it should have been expanded to include parts of area 6, but to finally get to a point where they have some form of an opportunity to hunt for them is a success story in itself. No different that the efforts of so many people to reestablish the turkey in areas that there were not many of them.

Hopefully they will continue to expand the season and give more opportunities to keep them in check.

I also think we are seeing more and more of them in areas we have never seen them before because of the hog population. There is only so much food for them to compete over.

Head east to the Vermilion river. Take your pick, east or west side of Vermilion. Big Woods or Live Oak areas, covered in bears.

I put a feeder out 2 months ago to get inventory on what I have coming around. Huge arse bear destroyed it.

One of my best hunting spots is a big oak flat that borders 60 acres of old cutover. Past few years the hogs have taken over this area. I assume the bear will enjoy it also leaving less for deer.

Can’t run feeders / protein because of bears

Can’t plant food plots because hogs root them up.

Only natural browse left for deer is privet and Cherokee briars. Guess I’ll just fertilize the wood line and hunt the privet and briars for food sources.
