My wife (no pics) wants to get a ski boat to take the kids out pleasure riding, tubing, skiing and whatnot.
I don't have a clue about brands/models as I only just ride on friends boats when we head to the river.
(Only boats I know anything about is duck boats)
I'm thinking I would like to buy used to lessen the depreciation hit. Where is the best place to look and what should I be looking for?

How much you wanting to spend? Where will you use said boat?How many people will be in boat normally?

If you want a big family ski boat, get a v-drive. Inboards that can throw a big wake, carry a lot of people, get on plane fairly quick. It won't make the best slalom boat, but that doesn't sound like what you are looking for, and it can still pull the recreational skier.
Malibu, MasterCraft, Nautique, Supra, Centurion all great but pricey boats. If you're looking for a nice boat for a little less, Moomba is a Supra on a budget and they make a good boat.

Look for an early 2000's vdrive true inboard boat. Will be at the top end of budget but can be had. Don't let hours scare you if boat serviced regularly. Personally I'd rather a boat get regular use vs sitting in someone's driveway. People who use their boat typically fix problems as they arise. My .02

Anybody know of any pros/cons on seadoo challenger? My buddy had one back in the mid 2000's and I remember it being a fun little boat.

The engine cooling system in the mid 2000's models was absolutely horrible. It was very easy to starve the motor, overheat, and blow the thing. I'm unsure about newer models.
My graduate school professor owned an '06 I believe. He went through three engines before selling the thing for a pretty big loss. Just google challenger engine blown and there's quite a bit written about the issue.

Three summers ago I bought a 19' 2007 Regal with 138 hours from a guy in Covington, and I found him through Craig's list. He kept maintenance records and the boat was flushed and cleaned after every run (you could tell) and garage kept, so it was in great shape. The NADA value was $17,000, and that's what he was asking. However he also had a nice trailer with hydraulic brakes, a canopy, carpets, covers, nice 2 person tube, skis, nice jackets, etc.
No one has mentioned Regal, but it is a nice boat--flies while carrying a full boat, and throws a decent wake. It has the Volvo Penta inboard. It was well worth the money, and sounds like a similar setup to what you're looking for.
Served me well, but didn't use it much last year. Throwing orotund the idea of selling it, but can't pull the trigger.

Are you planning on paying cash? I paid the full $17,000 for the Regal. Used some cash, but financed most of it. The only place I could find that would finance a used boat was Farm Bureau Bank--online bank that is the same as the insurance company. However, I recently recommended them to a friend and apparently they've changed their requirements and policies since my loan and he couldn't come to terms with them.
You may want to add the request for financing recommendations, if you plan on buying from an individual and not a broker.
