The first old man climbers had pins that came out rather easily. On way down one evening and the pin on the top came out (I think it caught on my sleeve or pants) an the top came off. Left me hanging upside down with my feet in the footstraps. It was at that moment I realized just how strong gravity pulls. I ended up wiggling loose and falling out while holding onto a nearby sapling. Landed on my side and rolled about 100 ft down a hill hitting almost every stump on the way down. Ankles swole up like footballs immediately. Crawled to truck and called my brother(bag phone days).Fall was about 12-14 ft. Ended up w half a dozen broken bones. I was very lucky.

Had a .308 bullet whiz by my head on a pipeline once.

Also had a rifle go off in my lap.

Both made me check my drawers.

Never had many scary moments but one time I did have the bottom fall all the way to the ground. Lucky I was in a small enough tree I just bear hugged the tree and worked the climber back down.

I did get shot at one time crossing a cut over to get a deer i had shot earlier that morning. I was decked out in my orange
( hat and vest) heard the bullet wiz by followed by the muzzle blast. Hit the ground in ankle deep water, pants full of shite. Army cralwled about 200 yards back to my stand, then ran to truck. When i got to were the shot came from, i saw a truck speeding off. Never did catch the fukers.

The scariest moment I've had in a tree stand was every time I climbed a tree with my old piece of shite loggy bayou stand. That thing slipped all the time. It was a death trap. I was a teenager when I used it. I asked my dad to weld some spikes on it and he kind of ignored me. Ten years later, it was in his shed and he decided to use it one day. He was like, "WTF? If I'd known it was like that I wouldn't have let you use it." I decided not to point out how I had asked him to fix it.

i left a lean to up too long and the tree grew into the chain. i took a pair of bolt cutters and climbed the stand. i cut one side and climbed down. i tried to pull the chain completely out, but my efforts were fruitless. the ladder was now at a 45* angle. i climbed it and cut a link of the chain. i was then forced to grab the tree with one of my arms and ride the tree on down.

word to the wise, sliding 15 feet on a pine tree isn't conducive to keeping the flesh on an exposed forearm intact.

If you ain't climbed up about 20 feet in a baker, then turned around and sat on the only piece, the bottom, with your legs dangling off....then had to stand back up, turn around and bring that thing down...you haven't lived yet.

If you have o ask what a Baker is, I prob can't explain.
Here is quote:

quote:

In the 1970's the Baker Company from Valdosta created the climbing stand and revolutionized deer hunting.

As with a lot of new developments however, there were problems with the design that resulted in falls and lawsuits, and then the resulting closing of the company.

Oh, and I stepped out on to an unlocked lock on at about 14 foot up while in Iowa, I can still feel the impact of landing flat on my back. When I realized I wasn't dead and began wiggling shite to make sure it would work I was one terrified human.

None. Not even one. Even back when my stand was a piece of plywood attched to a welded "stand" arrangement and no top part.

I tied my rifle to a rope to lower to the ground. Half way down, the gun came loose and fell to the ground, butt first. I swear I thought I was gonna get shot.

Are you serious? Please tell me you unload your gun while getting in and out the stand now.

Mine were homemade versions of the death traps. I think I still have chest scares from pine bark.

2007 i was hunting in a lock-on one after noon after the Saints lost their 4th straight game that year. I remember they lost to the Panthers by 3. Still hurts..

To the point, I was still drunk from watching the game and i decided i needed to carry a couple miller lites with me in my pack. I climbed up at about 4:30 pm, and started drinking. At dark i stood up and let my bow down. i put my back pack on and went to get on the laddter to climb down. (20' high) Well i had just gotten my first foot on the first rung of the ladder when my boots slipped off the ladder. I commenced to falling down and trying to grab the ladder. I hit my face on the tree and ladder rungs for about 5' down the tree. By the grace of God i had regained a grip on the ladder. I slowly climbed down almost in tears because of how scared i was. I chipped a tooth and my nose was bleeding pretty bad.

I damn near fell all the way down. Still scares me to this day.

No safety harness + being severly buzzed+ drinking more+ lockon stand 20' up + being red assed at the Saints = near death experience
