I don't hunt deer but have a question. Why climb a tree? I know they use "blinds" on the ground a lot in Texas.

Years ago I went with a friend to his camp in Texas and saw plenty from the ground. The club members hunted in "blinds" on the ground. It was like a wooden stand on stilts, just on the ground.
I actually went squirrel hunting- can't stand to deer hunt cause I like to shoot when I hunt.
Anyway, was just wondering.

In the early 90's a fellow hunting next door to a friend's place fell from a lock-on. He was paralyzed from the neck down. The guy had told no one that he was going hunting much less where. He laid on the ground unable to move. His wife was frantic that night, but she had no idea where he might be. The next day someone thought to go check the hunt club and found his truck, ATV, and then him.
We were in a severe drought at the time. While he laid on the ground all night and morning, fireants were drawn to the moisture in his eyes. They blinded him. As far as I know, he is still alive, somewhere, paralyzed and blind...

Holy shite!!!
Never considered fire ants doing something like that.
And to not be able to move and do anything about it? If thats not a real-world nightmare I don't know what is.
I can't imagine..

Thinking about that incident always makes my stomach churn. It also keeps me from doing a lot of stupid shite that I used to do.

Was climbing a Scafolding that was made into a box stand. It was about 15' which is very high for a box stand. I got all the way to where I could touch the bottom of the window and the ladder broke. I fell all the way and landed on my back next to an iron post that was beat into the ground to tie the cable tie down too.
After getting up and nothing was broke, I climbed back into stand and killed a 9pt about 3 hours later.

I didn't tell anybody where I was going hunting one afternoon. I ended up stuck 40 feet up a huge pine tree until 3am when my buddies found me. Damn climber went up it just fine but wouldn't go back down due to the thickness and bark. Lesson learned.

Used to dip chains on home made lock ons hooked the chain but it only caught some rubber dropped like a rock was only 10 feet up but feet hit a fence and flipped me on my back laid there for about 20 minutes couldn't move thought that was it.
Same stand about 30 feet up in an oak on a hillside in Dolorosso Miss. Had a loaded muzzle loaded cocked and ready when the stand gave I landed on the branch at my feet face down and watched the muzzle loader bounce offf limb after limb waiting to get shot. Felt like 20 mins watching that gun bouncing around. Left the stand in the woods.
Climbed a leaning tree 2 years ago bottom dropped on way down arms caught top rails thought both arms where out of the sockets. Slid down with one arm. Don't climb leaning trees. Can't wait to get back in the woods. Have a Summit now.

I always know for a fact that one thing always happens when I get up in a tree...I'm gonna fall asleep! It just happens. So I just make damn good and sure I'm strapped-up well. No incidents thusfar.

One year I was at the property by myself and wanted to hunt a stand that I rarely hunted. It was after a snowfall in N Louisiana. I got to the top of a ladder stand and turned to sit on my cushion. Seat was iced over and I nearly slid off the damn thing. I wanted to hunt bad, so I stayed up but it was slippery. If that wasn't bad enough, before I was getting down, I tied my rifle to a rope to lower to the ground. Half way down, the gun came loose and fell to the ground, butt first. I swear I thought I was gonna get shot.
