Salt Life was originally a couple of surfers who had that tatooed on their backs (like Thug Life across the stomach)...they just went where the money was. Over here, the Salt Life deal is more about going to the beach, surfing, skim boarding, etc.

She got it at least 3 years ago because she is always ahead of the curve. It has literally been in my closet for 3 years unworn. We did use the phrase "I am so salt life" many times this weekend, but only because we had just done something badass.
